Women’s Basketball Battles at Alfred University

ALFRED, N.Y. — The Keuka College Women's Basketball team lost on Saturday at Alfred University 66-53 in an Empire 8 game.

Keuka College (3-20, 0-16 Empire 8) was paced by freshman Mary Cotter (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) with 14 points. Lauren Hill (Cobleskill, N.Y. / Cobleskill-Richmondville) and Meg McGwin (Rochester, N.Y. / Hilton) each added nine points and McGwin led the Wolves with seven rebounds.

Keuka College won the tip and quickly struck as Lauren Hill found Mary Cotter for the three-pointer ten seconds into the game. The Saxons followed with a three, but the Wolves answered with layups by McGwin and Hill to take a 7-3 lead. Alfred would tie the game midway through the first, but the Wolves took the lead right back. Killian Mahoney (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) hit a three with a minute left to take a 20-13 lead. The Wolves held a 20-15 advantage after the first quarter.

Lauren Hill scored the first five points for the Wolves in the second quarter as Keuka built an eight-point lead. The Saxons would cut into the margin. Alfred held Keuka without a point for the final four minutes of the half. During that span, the Saxons scored seven to tie the game and then take a 33-30 lead into halftime.

Alfred University scored the first four points of the third quarter as Keuka's scoreless run extended to nine minutes. Sydney Brown (Lowville, N.Y. / Lowville Academy) ended the run with a jumper to make it 37-32. The Wolves cut the margin down to four following a Mary Cotter jumper, but Alfred would lead by five, 42-37, going into the final quarter.

The Saxons started the fourth on an 8-0 run as they pushed their lead to 13 points. Ellen Lavonas (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) grabbed an offensive rebound and made a shot to end the run. Mary Cotter followed with a three to cut the lead to eight, 50-42. However, that would be as close as the Wolves would make it. Alfred University saw the game out to defeat Keuka College 66-53 on Saturday.

  • The Wolves have dropped eight straight to the Saxons and are 16-26 all-time against Alfred
  • Keuka College shot 8-20 from deep with a .400 shooting percentage. It was their third-best shooting percentage from three this season
  • Sydney Brown passed Reighly Melochick and moved into a tie for eighth with Katie Stuart '17 on the career threes list
  • Meg McGwin surpassed 500 career points in the game on Saturday

Up Next for Keuka College: The Wolves close the 2022-23 season at home next weekend. Keuka College will host Houghton University on Friday night. The Wolves then host Medaille University in the season finale on Saturday.
