Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Cassidy Dumont came within a point of her collegiate-high with 28 points, but her effort was not quite enough as the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team dropped a 77-65 decision to Rensselaer in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Golden Knights fell to 8-13 overall and 5-11 in conference games, while RPI improved to 11-12 and 8-8. Clarkson finishes off the regular-season next weekend at Skidmore and Union.
Clarkson got off to a solid start and led briefly in the first quarter, but two 3-pointers from Brielle Sharry in just over a minute put the Engineers on top by four. The Engineers expanded their lead in the early going of the second quarter, eventually extending the advantage to 10 points on a layup from Lolo Reynolds at 5:40. The Knights got back to within single digits on several occasions, and went into the locker room trailing by seven when Cassidy Dumont scored on a last second jumper (34-27).
RPI found came out of the break strong, going on a 15-2 run in the first five minutes, capped by a Heather Converse layup at 5:05 to put the gap at 20 points. Clarkson would not go away, however, as the Knights buried a number of 3-pointers down the stretch of the third period. Mariah Benavides hit the first to spark the run, and Raelin Burns hit two 3-pointers to pull the Knights within eight. The Engineers recovered in the final moments of the quarter, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Danielle Strauff to put the lead at 14 points for RPI.
In the fourth, Clarkson was able to get back within single digits on a couple of occasions, including a 3-pointer from Dumont with just over a minute to go, but those were the last points of the game for Clarkson, as they fell by 12.
Both teams shot well in the second half, with RPI shooting 50.0% from the floor and Clarkson coming in just under that number with a 15-for-31 effort.
Dumont scored her game-high 28 points on 12-for-23 shooting, while also adding in five rebounds. Freshman Raelin Burns came off the bench to score 12 points, making both of her 3-point field goal attempts and shooting 3-for-5 from the field overall.
For RPI, four players finished in double figures, led by Nicole DaPra's double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Heather Converse also had a double-double on 18 points and 11 boards, and Lolo Reynolds had 12 points and six assists. Brielle Sharry also contributed 14 points and six boards.
