CLEVELAND, OH – Case Western Reserve knocked down 13 triples, including seven in the first quarter, as the Spartans defeated 25th-ranked University of Rochester women's basketball, 78-60 on Friday evening inside Horsburgh Gymnasium.

Maura Leverone got the scoring started with a three-pointer of her own 19 seconds into the opening period, but Isabella Mills quickly answered for the Spartans on the other end.

Mills knocked down the first of seven threes for the Spartans in the first quarter, as CWRU shot nearly 60 percent from the field and 7-for-12 from beyond the arc in the opening quarter.

The 'Jackets and Spartans traded buckets in the early going, with Rochester holding a 10-9 advantage following Alexis Sestric's three-pointer with 6:07 to play in the first. But an 8-0 run for the Spartans, highlighted by a pair of treys, gave CWRU a lead they'd never relinquish, 17-10 with 4:13 left until the end of the first.

Leverone answered Margaret Terry's three with one of her own, pulling UR back within four, but back-to-back threes put the Spartans up double digits, before Mills and Lucy Vanderbeck combined to put CWRU up 27-16 at the quarter break.

Rochester would pull within six on five quick points from Katie Titus and Sestric to start the second, and then five on Callie McCulley's three, but Terry had an answer on the other end.

Up by six, Vanderbeck and Mills knocked down two more treys, putting CWRU up 12, 40-28, with 3:43 to play until the half, and neither team would score the rest of the way, sending the 'Jackets into the locker room down 12.

The Spartans would extend their lead to its largest of the game, 19, midway through the third, and lead by 14 heading to the fourth.

And though back-to-back Sestric three-pointers brought UR within eight, while a 6-0 run keyed by Titus' three-pointer made it a five-point game, the Yellowjackets couldn't get any closer, as Kayla Characklis responded with a three-point play to put CWRU back up eight, kicking off a 15-2 run for the Spartans to close out the 78-60 victory.

With the loss, their third-straight, #25 Rochester drops to 14-7 (4-6 UAA) on the year, while Case Western Reserve moves to 14-7 (5-5 UAA).

Sestric led UR with 17 points, while Titus and Leverone added 12 and 11 points apiece. McCulley led Rochester on the glass with nine rebounds, while Kelsey Stites added a team-high four assists.

As a team, the 'Jackets shot just 38.7 percent, while CWRU cooled off a bit from their hot start, shooting 44.4 percent for the game, and 44.8 percent from three.

The Yellowjackets will next wrap up the 2022-23 road slate in Pittsburgh, PA on Sunday, Feb. 12 against Carnegie Mellon at 2:00 p.m.
