WBB: George drills five triples in setback to USM

 

PLYMOUTH, N.H. The Plymouth State University women's basketball team fell to the University of Southern Maine, 68-52, in a Little East Conference (LEC) game in Foley Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

The Panthers led for much of the first half, but a 17-4 run by the Huskies on either side of halftime gave Southern Maine a lead they would not relinquish. Plymouth State was able to pull within eight points, but the Huskies kept the comeback hopes quiet.

Freshman Sophie George (Meredith, N.H.) led the Panthers with 19 points, notching her 300th of the season late in the third quarter. Junior Lauren Keller (Fort Morgan, Colo.) added nine points of her own, while senior Jalen Cook (Monkton, Vt..) finished with seven points and seven rebounds in the loss.

George becomes the third player over the last ten season to reach 300 points in a season.

Plymouth State falls to 5-16 (0-14 LEC) on the season, while the Huskies improve to 6-16 and 4-9 in the LEC.

How it Happened:

  • Back-to-back threes by George gave the Panthers an early 6-2 lead with 7:38 left in the first quarter.
  • PSU was able to keep the advantage, 15-12, at the end of one.
  • The Huskies scored ten straight points to take the lead, 21-17, with 5:33 on the clock before the half.
  • PSU tied the game at 23-23 at the 3:24 mark in the second.
  • USM ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 33-25 lead into the locker room.
  • The Huskies opened things up to start the third quarter, grabbing a 40-27 lead with 6:45 to play.
  • Plymouth State got as close as eight, but the Panthers found themselves down 49-36 after three.
  • PSU scored 14 points in the fourth but the Huskies sealed off the conference win.

By the Numbers:

  • The Panthers went 18-of-51 (35.3%) from the floor and 6-of-18 (33.3%) from three.
  • Both teams pulled down 38 rebounds, with the Huskies holding an 11-7 edge on the offensive glass.
