WBB: Beacons use big second half to outshine Panthers

 

BOSTON, Mass. The Plymouth State University women's basketball team fell to the University of Massachusetts Boston, 73-42, in a Little East Conference (LEC) game at Clark Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Beacons started to pull away late in the third quarter with ten unanswered points. PSU started and ended the game on a high note, but the Panthers were limited to 12 points in the second and third quarters, allowing UMass Boston to drift away.

Freshman Sophie George (Meredith, N.H.) led the Panthers with 18 points, while senior Sarah Sweet (Narragansett, R.I.) added 14 points of her own. The duo combined for 32 of the team's 42 points.

Plymouth State slides to 5-15 (0-13 LEC) on the season, while the Beacons move to 12-10 and 5-7 in league play.

  • The Panthers took an early 6-2 lead with 6:58 left in the first quarter.
  • Nine straight points by the Beacons brought them to an 11-6 advantage with 4:10 left in the first.
  • The first quarter closed out as a one-possession game, with the Beacons leading 18-15.
  • Neither team reached double-digits in the second quarter, as the hosts maintained the lead, 26-21, at the half.
  • UMass Boston turned a 10-0 run into a 41-26 lead with 2:10 remaining in the third.
  • PSU trailed, 45-27, through the end of the third quarter.
  • UMass Boston poured in 28 points in the fourth, the most in any quarter this year, to close out the victory.

By the Numbers:

  • The Panthers went 14-of-51 (27.5%) from the floor and 6-of-22 (27.3%) from three.
  • UMass Boston controlled the glass, outrebounding the Panthers 50-28, including 18-6 on the offensive boards.
  • The Beacons took 15 more field goal attempts in the contest.
  • UMass Boston has controlled the series of late, winning 11 straight matchups, though PSU still leads the all-time series, 40-31.
