WBB: Late surge comes up short at Castleton

 

CASTLETON Vt. The Plymouth State University women's basketball team fell to Castleton University, 63-46, in a Little East Conference (LEC) game at Glenbrook Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

The Panthers carrier a late third quarter run into the fourth with 17 unanswered points in a valid comeback attempt, but Castleton slowed play and stopped the late game surge.

Freshman Sophie George (Meredith, N.H.) led all scorers with 23 points, while senior Jalen Cook (Monkton, Vt.) added 13 of her own. Sophomore Alli Ingalls (Hampstead, N.H.) nearly posted her first double-double with the Panthers in the losing effort, finishing with six points and nine rebounds.

Plymouth State slides to 5-14 (0-12 LEC) on the season, while Castleton improves to 14-6 and 7-4 in league play.

How it Happened:

  • The Spartans opened play with a 12-5 lead with 6:15 to go in the opening quarter.
  • PSU cut the game to 14-11 at the 4:19 mark in the first.
  • Castleton carried a 16-11 lead into the end of the first quarter.
  • The Panthers tied the game at 16-16 to start off the second, but Castleton closed the half on an 18-2 run to go up 37-21 at the break.
  • Castleton started to open things up, scoring the first eight points of the third to take a 45-21 lead with 7:10 on the clock.
  • Plymouth State closed out the third by scoring the final eight points to trail 55-37.
  • The Panthers extended the run into the fourth quarter, scoring 17 unanswered points as the gap shrunk to 55-46 with 4:54 left to play.
  • Castleton slowed the game down over the final minutes to hold off the PSU comeback attempt.

By the Numbers:

  • The Panthers went 17-of-52 (32.7%) from the floor and 8-of-24 (33.3%) from three.
  • Castleton outrebounded PSU by a 41-33 margin, including 9-3 on the offensive glass.
  • Plymouth State recorded four blocks in the contest.
  • Bench points were scare, as the PSU reserves outscored their counterparts 4-2.
  • George has surpassed 250 points on the season.
  • Castleton controlled the paint, outscoring the Panthers by a 42-10 margin.
