The Guilford College women's basketball team looked to complete the season sweep of Averett University. The Quakers completed the sweep with a 68-52 victory.
Leading the way was Anna Giannopoulou with 16 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Lindsay Gauldin added 12 points while grabbing six boards.
Guilford (18-3, 11-3) and Giannopoulou opened the scoring for the game. After two Averett (4-17, 2-12) the Quakers scored six-straight with four off the hand of Giannopoulou. Leading 10-2, GC held the advantage and led by the eight-point margin (21-13) at the end of the first.
After a strong offensive first, the Quakers showed its stout defense holding the Cougars to only three points. The visitors added 13 points to its total and led 34-16 as both squads headed to their respective locker rooms.
Guilford kept the strong defensive play going in the third as it held Averett to single-digits (9) once more. Meanwhile the offense scored 25 with six from Giannopoulou. GC led 59-25 going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
In the final period of play, the Cougars had its best offensive period as they scored 27 points. However, the difference was too large as the Quakers won by 16.
As a team, GC shot 40.3% (25-62) while holding Averett to just 26.2% (17-65) from the field. The Quakers won the point differential in the paint (32-26) and off the bench (20-12).
Guilford returns to the Ragan-Brown Field House for a matchup with the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday, February 4. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
