Knights End With Weekend Split After Defeat at Vassar

More news about: Clarkson

Poughkeepsie, NY – Entering Saturday's contest, the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team ranked second in the Liberty League in turnovers per game, but the Golden Knights had an uncharacteristic amount of miscues against Vassar College and fell 89-57 against the Brewers in Liberty League action.

The Golden Knights fell to 7-9 overall and 3-7 in conference games, while Vassar improved to 12-7 and 9-3. Clarkson closes out its lengthy run of road games on Tuesday when the team travels down Route 11 to take on St. Lawrence University.

Clarkson struggled with turnovers and inopportune fouls in the first half, committing 13 turnovers and allowing 14 free throws. However, the Golden Knights had a big second quarter that got the offense going after a slow start. Clarkson was just 3-for-11 in the opening 10 minutes, but rallied to shoot 69.2% in the second quarter (9-for-13). Unfortunately for Clarkson, though, Vassar was able to maintain its nine-point edge thanks to its advantage from the free throw line.

For the second straight day, sophomore Cassidy Dumont carried the scoring load in the first half for the Knights, tallying more than half of the team's points (16 of 30), and shooting 6-for-11 from the floor. Vassar made an adjustment at the break and decided to do what it could to take Dumont away, allowing her to take only two shots in the third quarter, both coming with less than 45 seconds to go in the period. The strategy worked somewhat, as Clarkson was limited to only 12 points while Vassar doubled up the Knights with 24 points, stretching the gap to 21 through 30 minutes.

Vassar's offense didn't slow down much in the fourth, as the Brewers put up 26 points over the final 10 minutes to close out the game.

Dumont finished with a game-high 24 points, shooting 8-for-17 from the floor and a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line. Elaina Porter also added 10 points and five rebounds while Bella Doyle contributed nine points and six boards.

For Vassar, Sierra McDermed came off the bench to score 22 points, going 6-for-8 from the floor and 9-for-11 from the free throw line. Alex Lee shot 8-for-11 from the field for 18 points and Bella Tawney scored 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting in just 16 minutes.

Clarkson committed 24 turnovers overall, well over its average of 13.4 per game entering Saturday's contest.
