Mustang Effort Ends in 73-46 Loss to Golden Wolves

READING, Pa. – Stevenson women's basketball (6-12, 5-4 MACC) faced the Alvernia Golden Wolves (12-6, 7-2 MACC) for the second time this season, recording a 73-46 loss on the road.
 
Sophomore guard Laci Johnson continued to be a force for the Mustangs, notching 17 points and three rebounds. First year forward Aliyah Jean-Jacques recorded 10 points and eight rebounds, just a hair away from the first double-double of the season for the Mustangs.
 
FIRST QUARTER
The Golden Wolves broke on to the board early with a three- pointer seconds in. Gaining five points as the clock ticked on, Jean-Jacques scored a successful free throw series, putting the Mustangs on the board. Minutes later, Stevenson tied the game with a layup and free throw from Johnson, with the score at 5-5. The Mustangs took the lead with just under five minutes left with a layup from Johnson. The Golden Wolves battled, taking the lead back with another three pointer. Their junior guard Jordan Karmonick scored a trio of three pointers in the first quarter, ending it on top 14-11.
 
SECOND QUARTER
Trailing the Golden Wolves to open the second, Stevenson saw the gap widen, with Alvernia in the lead by eight points within the first three minutes. Jean-Jacques scored a layup with just under eight minutes remaining before the gap grew again by the Golden Wolves. Johnson scored seconds later, but Alvernia maintained a consistent lead. The half ended with a 17-point lead, 40-23, for the Golden Wolves.
 
THIRD QUARTER
To open the third, Johnson and Jean-Jacques utilized the opportunity to notch points, but the Golden Wolves answered quickly and consistently. First year forward Destiny Towns brought the Mustangs over 31 points on the afternoon with 2:33 remaining in the quarter. Though the Mustangs scored 12 points in the third, the control was in the opponents' favor with the quarter ending 55-35 for the Golden Wolves.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
In the final quarter, Jean-Jacques scored twice more about two minutes in, hitting her 10th point of the afternoon. Junior forward Michelle Mesquita and senior forward Morgan DeBeary recorded points as the final quarter waned. With consistent effort from the Golden Wolves, the Mustangs saw the writing on the wall with a 73-46 decision for the conference opponent.
 
UP NEXT
The Mustangs fall to 6-12 overall and 5-4 in conference play and   drop to fifth in the conference standings. The Golden Wolves improve to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play, moving to second in the conference standings. The Mustangs return home for a second conference game of the season against the Hood College Blazers Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. The Golden Wolves travel to conference opponent Widener University this Wednesday for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
