Mustangs Suffer 91-45 Loss to Eagles

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Stevenson women's basketball stepped out of conference to play in the first of three away games this week, concluding their Monday night game with a 91-45 loss to the University of Mary Washington Eagles.
 
Sophomore guard Laci Johnson and sophomore guard Emori Jeselskis topped the Mustangs with nine and eight points respectively, with first year forward Tessa Boswell clocking seven. The Mustangs had 25 rebounds with three Mustangs tying with three total. For the Eagles, sophomore guard Elizabeth Dufrane clocked 17  points and four assists, and the Eagles had 27 assists on the evening.
 
FIRST QUARTER
The Eagles scored early but the Mustangs were able to bring the game to 6-6 following a layup from Jeselskis and a made free throw from first year guard Erin DixonTessa Boswell took the temporary lead for the Mustangs with a three pointer with just over five minutes remaining, but the Eagles matched pace and took the lead just minutes later with a successful field goal from Dufrane. The first quarter ended with a six-point gap, 23-17.
 
SECOND QUARTER
With the Eagles establishing a lead, the Mustangs were unable to curtail their opponent's momentum. Both Jeselskis and sophomore forward Stephenae Lawrence notched a few good field goals, but the push could not break the Eagle's offense, and the half ended with a wider 23-point gap at 50-27.
 
THIRD QUARTER
While the Eagles continued to increase their lead as they reached the 70th point, Mustang first year forward Kalea Wynter made a successful field goal with just under eight minutes remaining. By the end of the third, the gap was further widened by 41 points as the teams saw a 70-29 score.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
The Eagles scored 21 more points in the final quarter as they continued to secure their lead. Johnson scored two three- pointers and a layup in the final period, while senior forward Maleah Smith, Wynter, and first year forward Destiny Towns each contributed for the Mustangs. The game ended with a 91-45 loss for Stevenson
 
UP NEXT
The Mustangs fall to 5-9 overall, and the Eagles improved to 14-2 overall. The Mustangs return to conference play this week as they travel to York College of Pennsylvania Wednesday, Jan. 11 for an 8 p.m. tipoff. The Eagles commence conference play when they host Christopher Newport University this Wednesday for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
