BEVERLY, Mass. -- The University of New England overcame a four-point deficit late in regulation and tallied the initial five of overtime to start towards a 74-69 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory at Endicott College inside MacDonald Gymnasium on Tuesday evening (Jan. 24).
After yielding 10 unanswered to the Gulls at the beginning of the 4th quarter, flipping a five-point lead, the Nor'easters got a hoop from Faye Veilleux on the ensuing possession to halt the run and stay within striking distance (52-49). Endicott continued to maintain the edge all the way down the stretch, but the gap only hovered between one and four points. Down 61-57 with 1:12 to go, Veilleux nailed her only three-point attempt of the contest to trim it to one, and soon Keagan Dunbar made a pair of free throws to tie things a 62-62 with 0:18 showing. An EC turnover gave the visitors one last look, but nothing came from it.
In the extra session, Gabby Soter recorded the first three points and Veilleux put in two more as the Nor'easters went ahead for good at 67-62. Tara Laugeni got two back for the Gulls on the following play at the 3:16 mark, but the next addition to the scoreboard came more than two minutes later (1:08), and it was Dunbar making the score 69-64. The difference was 70-66 when Kaitlyn Santos stepped in to draw a charge with 22 seconds left, before Kasey Oliver essentially sealed the match with four free throws in the waning moments, on either side of a Katelyn Konareski three-pointer for Endicott.
Veilleux wound up exceeding her previous career high by 11, totaling 32 points on 14-of-23 shooting. It was the most scoring done by a UNE player in six years, since Alicia Brown netted 33 near the end of 2016-17. Veilleux also made the night her second double-double with a game-best 12 rebounds, and picked up six steals.
The Nor'easters (13-5, 9-2 CCC) got 19 points and seven assists from Dunbar, while Oliver finished with nine points and six boards. Juliana Tracey contributed five assists, three steals, and two blocks, in addition to six points.
UNE is now 4-0 in overtime contests this season, and completes the regular-season sweep of Endicott for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign.
The Gulls (7-11, 5-6) received 15 points and four blocks out of Sarah Dempsey, and 12 points from Konareski. Laugeni and Emily St. Thomas both added 10 points, and St. Thomas had nine caroms. Libby Fleming hauled in 11 rebounds to lead a 50-35 advantage for Endicott on the boards. While EC posted a 12-point scoring cushion from behind the arc, the hosts were hampered by committing twice as many turnovers as their opponent (23) -- UNE scored 25 points on those trips.
Play was fairly even through 10 minutes, until six in-a-row from Cassie Caldwell gave the Gulls their largest lead (23-16) with 7:39 left before the half. However, Veilleux (9) and the Nor'easters went strong into the break, scoring 17 of the last 21 to gain a 33-27 cushion. Endicott struck for the first six of the 3rd to tie things, only to see the visitors hold a 47-42 edge entering the 4th.
