Women’s Basketball Defeat Rivals In Battle Of The Beaks

PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team took on Nazareth College at home for a Tuesday night Empire 8 Matchup. The Cardinals put in a strong performance, winning 84-66 against the Golden Flyers. After tonight, Fisher improves their record to 14-2 and 9-0 in conference play. The Cardinals winning streak extends to ten games as they stay atop the conference standings.
 
Emilia Johnson started the game scoring a three-pointer. Fisher shortly followed with a five-point run led by Kaitlyn Walker's good layup. The Cardinals then went on an eight-point run, highlighted by two good layups by Presleigh BrunnerSidney Tomasso and Emily McLaughlin both picked up layups at the end of the quarter, with the Cardinal's leading 23-9. Tomasso carried the team's momentum into the second frame, scoring a good jumper. Halfway through the second, Johnson made a good three-pointer, increasing the Cardinal's lead to 30-20. Less than thirty seconds later, Katie Moravec scored a good layup, furthering Fisher's lead. Johnson finished the half scoring two more three-pointers, and the Cardinals ended the half leading 44-35.
 
Tomasso started the second half scoring two good free-throws that pushed Fisher's lead to 46-37. After some back-and-forth between the teams, Claire Kruszka picked up a good three-pointer. Tomasso carried on scoring, contributing four of the six points in a six-point run that put the Cardinal's lead at 60-48. The quarter finished with Kruszka making a good jumper, furthering the Fisher advantage. Brunner picked up the scoring in the final frame with a good layup, increasing the cardinals lead to 68-50. A few minutes later, Johnson scored another three-pointer, her fifth of the night. The game finished with the Cardinals going on a 13-point run that was started by Lauren Nawojski's good jumper and ended by Brunner's free-throw, with Fisher winning 84-66.
 
Brunner was the Cardinal's top scorer, scoring 20 points, having four rebounds, and two steals. Tomasso also had a stellar night, scoring 19, having eight steals, and six rebounds. Nawojski also performed strongly, gathering six rebounds, five assists, and playing 20 minutes. Johnson scored 15 points, three rebounds, and played 30 minutes.
 
The Cardinals play next away on Friday, January 27 for a 5:30 p.m. Empire 8 matchup against Elmira College.
