BABSON PARK, Mass. — With a little more than four minutes remaining in the third quarter, Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.) pulled up for a jump shot to take the first lead of the game, 39-37, for the Trinity College women's basketball team and the junior's career-high 22 points in the Navy & Gold helped the team defeat No.11 Babson college on the road on Monday, 65-61. Trinity improved to 17-1 on the season while the Beavers dropped to 15-2. The Bantams return to action on their home hardwood on January 27 with a 7 p.m tip against New England Small College Athletic Conference rival Hamilton College.
The home team opened the contest with a three-pointer eight seconds in but 24 seconds later, Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass.) snatched the offensive rebound to allow Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) to pull up for a jumper for Trinity's first bucket of the night. A three-point basket by Wax off the offensive rebound from Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and a jumper by Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) set up by Campbell's defensive rebound notched seven points for the visitors as the trailed by one point. Trinity was held to seven points as the Beavers went on an 11-0 run before two free throws from Campbell ended the bantams dry spell. With 42 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter, Wax went airborne for a three-pointer as the team trailed 22-12.
A made layup by Campbell off the hands of Indi DelRocco (Branford, Conn.) followed by another three off the fingertips of Wax narrowed the gap to within four as the Beavers were held to zero points in the opening four minutes of the stanza. Wax, Campbell and Silva chipped away at the deficit with nine combined points to bring the score within one, 27-26. Babson netted seven points to close out the half, but a steal from Madison Stevens (Burlington, Conn.) kept the Bantams in close scoring proximity.
Monster blocked shots by Campbell and Wax denied the Beavers any chances to put up buckets halfway through the third quarter, except for three made shots on the line, enabled SIlva's and Wax's three-pointers, DelRocco's three-point play and a layup by Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.) to knot the game for the first time at 37 a piece with five minutes remaining. Off the defensive rebound by Silva, Wax secured the first lead for the Bantams as the teams battled aggressively back and forth before another three-point play by DelRocco regained the lead for the final time for the Navy & Gold with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. With one second left on the clock in regulation, the home team drove to the basket for a layup and brought the score to within one, but a quick foul sent Silva to the line for two made free throws and buried the hatchet for the Bantams.
Wax also tacked on a trio of rebounds and a block, while classmate Campbell garnered a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, along with an assist, two steals and a pair of blocks. Also in double figures, DelRocco netted 10 points with three assists, a trio of rebounds and a steal.
