William Paterson Women's Basketball Drops Overtime NJAC Tilt to Rowan

WAYNE, N.J. – Three Pioneers combined to score 59 points, but the William Paterson women's basketball team (11-7, 6-5 NJAC) fell 71-64 in overtime to Rowan (11-7, 7-4 NJAC) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest on Jan. 21 at the Sports and Recreation Center.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Despite entering the third quarter down double figures (27-17), the Pioneers outscored the Profs, 27-11, to gain a six-point advantage (44-38). William Paterson shot 10-of-17 (.588) from the field and 4-of-6 (.666) from deep in the third frame with freshman Renee Wells leading the way with 11 points.
  • The Pioneers extended their lead to double digits (50-40) with 7:54 remaining in the fourth quarter before Rowan took a two-point lead (57-55) with 1:40 left to play following a 15-3 run. However, a layup by junior Brianna Smith evened the score and sent the game into overtime.
  • In the overtime period, Rowan edged out William Paterson and secured the 71-64 conference road win.  

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Senior Justina Cabezas scored 21 points to go with nine rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals.
  • It marked her fourth 20-point game of the season and her third in her last four outings.
  • Wells finished one rebound shy of a double-double after totaling a career-high 20 points and nine boards.
  • Smith recorded 18 points.
