Women’s Basketball: Hawks Cruise to Victory Over Colonels, CCC Record Still Unblemished

MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's basketball team shot 48 percent from the field in the first half, jumping out to an 18-4 lead in the opening quarter, on their way to downing Curry, 60-41, on Saturday in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play.

The Hawks' Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) led all scorers with 21 points, earning nine of her points at the free throw line.  Elie also pulled down eight rebounds, while dishing out a pair of assists.  Elie also played a role on the defensive end with three steals and a block. Kendi Barnard (Bedford, Mass.) had 15 points on a 6-8 shooting performance from the field, along with six rebounds and an assist.  Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) had 13 points, knocking down three shots from beyond the three-point line. Galligan also had a pair of steals and a block in the contest.

Curry's Kathryn Dunn had 15 points with six rebounds and an assist, with Kristyanna Remillard adding six points.

The Hawks were the first on the scoreboard, when Elie knocked down a pair of free throws 1:24 into the contest, before Elie came down the floor the following possession for a layup. Elie scored the opening six points for Roger Williams, before the Colonels scored when Remillard knocked down a jumper. Galligan then knocked down a jumper to spark a 12-2 run over the final 3:29 of the first quarter.

The Hawks their lead to 20 points, leading 28-8 with 6:12 remaining in the second quarter, with Elie finishing a three-point play at the free throw line. The Hawks went into halftime holding a 35-16 advantage.

In the third the Colonels cut the lead down to as few as 15 before, Elie and Barnard combined for the final three points to end the frame, with the Colonels outscoring the Hawks 12-11. The Hawks got the point back in the fourth, outscoring Curry 14-13 in the final frame.

Roger Williams (14-3, 10-0 CCC) will host Suffolk on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 5:30 pm in the Campus Rec Center.  The Hawks will then receive a visit from the University of New England on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 1 pm.
