Cortland Battles Late for 52-45 Win at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Cortland held Oneonta to two points over the final seven and a half minutes and the Red Dragons battled to a 52-45 road victory in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest. 
 
Cortland improved to 15-3 overall and is in second place in the league at 10-1, one half game behind 10-0 New Paltz. Oneonta is now 12-5 overall and third in the conference with a 7-3 mark. 
 
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) scored nine of her game-high 15 points in the last four minutes to help Cortland pull away. She finished 6-of-10 from the floor and added three steals and four rebounds. Maggie Malone (Cornwall) scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) finished with nine points, and Julia Siler (Seaford) and Sarah Tully (East Aurora) totaled eight and seven rebounds, respectively. 
 
Olivia Dobrovosky was Oneonta's lone double-figures scorer with 13 points. Jenna Harclerode finished with eight points and 10 rebounds and Clara Culeton matched Harclerode with 10 boards. 
 
Both teams were strong defensively as Oneonta was limited to 28 percent shooting overall and 23 percent (3-of-13) from the 3-point arc, while Cortland finished at 32 percent overall and 15 percent (3-of-20) from deep. 
 
Oneonta led 15-5 after the first quarter and held its largest lead at 17-5 after a basket during the first possession of the second. Cortland, however, used a 15-7 run over the final 8:27 of the period and trailed by only three, 26-23, at halftime. 
 
Cortland took its first lead at 33-32 on a Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) layup with 3:22 remaining in the third. The teams were eventually tied at 37-37 entering the fourth quarter. Oneonta took a 43-39 lead with 7:33 remaining on Emma Schwarzbeck's layup, but Tully hit two free throws on Cortland's next possession, and Cortland eventually tied the game on a Morano layup with 3:36 left. 
 
Oneonta grabbed its final lead, 45-43, when Dobrovosky hit a jumper with just over three minutes remaining. Morano knotted the game with a layup with 2:50 remaining and hit another layup with under a minute and a half left to put Cortland on top. Her 3-point play with 37.7 seconds left extended the lead to five. After a defensive stop, Morano missed two free throws with 16.1 seconds left, but she registered a steal in the backcourt that set up two Longford free throws with 9.6 ticks on the clock to close the scoring. 
 
Cortland will host Potsdam Friday at 5:30 p.m.
