Women’s Basketball Win At Home Against Hartwick

PITTSFORD, NY – The St. John Fisher University women's basketball team took on Hartwick College at home for a Friday Night Empire 8 matchup. The Cardinals had a strong performance, winning 77-46 against the Hawks. After tonight, Fisher improves their record to 12-2 and 7-0 in conference play. The Cardinals carry their win streak to eight games and sit atop the conference standings.
 
Katie Moravec started the night out strong, scoring the first layup of the game. Multiple turnovers took place over a span of a few minutes before Sidney Tomasso scored a layup, putting the Cardinals up 8-4. A slow first quarter waited a few minutes until Tomasso scored a three-pointer, increasing Fisher's lead. Four more points were scored by the Cardinals, with the Hawks responding with a layup. Hartwick ended the quarter with a buzzer-beating jumper, but the Cardinals led, 15-8.
 
The second quarter started with Claire Kruszka scoring a three-pointer four seconds in. Nearly two minutes later, Kaitlyn Walker scored a layup, helping further the Cardinal's lead from the Hawks'. A minute later, Hartwick claimed their first layup of the quarter, setting the score at 20-10. This was short-lived, however, with Ka. Moravec scoring a three-pointer right after. Brunner then scored a free-throw, with the Hawks responding with a good jumper. A couple of minutes later, Kelly Moravec got on the scoreboard, with a good three-pointer. The two teams spent the next few minutes going back and forth, highlighted by Emilia Johnson's three-pointer that increased Fisher's lead to 35-15. Hartwick then scored four points, with the half ending 35-19, in the Cardinal's favor.
 
The second half opened up with Hartwick scoring a good layup, quickly responded to by Tomasso's good three-pointer. Six more points were scored by the Cardinals, with Hartwick scoring a three-pointer that would put the score at 44-24, with Fisher in the lead. The next few minutes saw the two teams battling for points, before the Cardinal's went on a six-point run, started by Kruszka's two good free-throws. The hawks then responded with five points of their own, with the Cardinal's ending the quarter with two free-throws by Walker, putting the score at 62-36.
 
The final quarter started in Fisher's favor, with Brunner scoring two good free-throws. Walker scored a free-throw of her own, before the Hawks responded with a good jumper. Emily McLaughlin picked the game back up with a good three-pointer that increased Fisher's lead to 72-41. The Hawks responded with three points of their own, followed by Tessa Schuey scoring her first points of the game with a good three-pointer. The final two seconds of the game saw Julia Perales get on the scoreboard with two good free-throws, ending the game with the Cardinals winning 77-46.
 
Ka. Moravec led the game with 14 points, four steals, and three assists. Leading in rebounds, was Lauren Nawojski with seven, also picking up four points and two assists. Kruszka had a strong game, scoring nine points, five steals, and four rebounds. Playing the most for the Cardinals was Tomasso, who played 31 minutes, scored 10 points, and had five rebounds.
 
The Cardinals play again at home tomorrow night, January 21 for a 2:00 p.m. matchup against Russell Sage College.
