CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored the first 16 points and held Brockport without a field goal for more than nine minutes to start the game and the Red Dragons defeated the visiting Golden Eagles, 81-50, in SUNYAC women's basketball action.
Cortland maintains the top spot in the SUNYAC standings with an 8-0 league record and is now 12-2 overall. Brockport dropped to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) scored 12 of her career-high tying 19 points in the first quarter as the Red Dragons took a 25-4 lead into the first break. She finished 8-of-13 from the floor and had three assists. Maggie Malone (Cornwall) scored 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting and Sarah Tully (East Aurora) made all five of her shots and finished with 10 points, three assists and a team-high seven rebounds.
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) amassed eight points, three steals, four rebounds and a team-high five assists. Stef Gera (Auburn) made two 3-pointers and finished with a career-high eight points in just six minutes off the bench. Julia Siler (Seaford) and Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) each added three assists and Brooke Tillotson (Marathon) matched her career best with five rebounds. Cortland finished with 27 assists on 32 made field goals.
Juan Brown finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, Stephanie Jean-Baptiste and Shannon Blankenship each scored 10 points, and Zairea Hannah pulled down 11 rebounds for Brockport.
Cortland led 16-0 with 4:13 left in the first quarter behind six points from Tully and five each from Miedreich and Malone. Brockport ended its scoreless streak with two Anna Lee free throws at the 3:10 mark, but Cortland pushed its lead to 25-2 before Hannah hit a jumper with 16 seconds left in the quarter. Cortland led by at least 18 points in the second quarter and by at least 22 points the entire second half. The Red Dragons shot 44 percent from the field, including 57 percent in the first half, while limiting Brockport to 26 percent shooting for the contest.
Cortland will host Oswego in league play Friday at 5:30 p.m.
