W&J dominates Waynesburg for 12th straight win

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson women's basketball team knocked down 11 three-pointers as they rolled to a 79-41 victory over visiting Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at Salvitti Family Gymnasium. 
 
The win was the 12th straight for the Presidents, which is their longest winning streak for the program since the Red and Black won 16 straight in 2002-03.  
 
W&J put three players in double figures in the win over the Yellow Jackets. 
 
Meghan Dryburgh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) posted her eighth double-double effort of the season. Dryburgh recorded a season-high 19 points and added a game-high 10 rebounds in the winning effort. This was the fifth double-double in the past six games for Dryburgh. 
 
Adalynn Cherry (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) put together an efficient effort. Cherry finished with 15 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field. Cherry drained four triples in five attempts. 
 
Bezjak registered a 14-point day on 5-of-8 shooting. Bezjak knocked down three triples in four attempts. Bezjak added four assists. Victoria Koeck(Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) filled the stat sheet with six points, a team-high six assists and five rebounds. 
 
The Presidents converted 45.5 percent of its field goal attempts in the game. W&J made a season-high 11 three-pointers in the victory. 
 
A fast start fueled the Presidents as they took a 22-8 lead after the opening 10 minutes. The strong start for W&J included making 61.5 percent and all three three-point attempts in the opening quarter. 
 
A three-point field goal by Bezjak finished off an 8-0 W&J run to start the game. A little later, a jumper by Dryburgh swelled the W&J lead to 15-3 at the 5:40 mark. Waynesburg cut its deficit to 15-8 with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter but W&J closed the quarter on an 8-0 run. Cherry drained a triple in front of a pair of Dryburgh field goals that gave W&J a 14-point advantage after the first. 
 
Consecutive triples by Bezjak stretched W&J's lead to 31-10 with 5:58 to play in the second quarter. A little later, Alyssa Police (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bishop Canevin) sank a fastbreak jumper as part of a 13-0 run that extended the Presidents advantage to 38-10. A pair of free throws by Cherry made it 40-13 at halftime. 
 
W&J wasted little time finishing off the game early in the third. Koeck and Cherry drained early three-point field goals as W&J poured it on. Back-to-back baskets by Dryburgh gave W&J a 66-20 lead, its biggest lead of the game, at the 2:42 mark. 
 
Sydney Snyder (Loudonville, Ohio / Loudonville), Brianna Toal (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Moon Area), Haven Briggs (McKeesport, Pa. / Elizabeth Forward) and Ally Fisher (New Kensington, Pa. / Burrell) all found the scoring column in the fourth quarter as W&J finished off its latest victory. 
 
W&J shared the ball extremely well. The Presidents finished with 27 assists on 30 total field goals. W&J outrebounded Waynesburg by a 51-35 margin. The Presidents limited the Yellow Jackets to just 17 field goals on 63 attempts (27 percent) in the game. 
 
W&J heads to Bethany College for a conference clash on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Start time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
