Cortland Women Wear Down Fredonia in Second Half for 85-63 Victory

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's basketball team outscored Fredonia, 53-31, in the second half to pull away from a halftime tie and the Red Dragons remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with an 85-63 win over the visiting Blue Devils.
 
Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) led five double-figure scorers for Cortland (10-2, 6-0 SUNYAC) with 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. She made all three of her 3-point attempts and grabbed five rebounds. Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half and finished with three assists and Cortland career-highs of 11 rebounds, all on the defensive glass, and five steals.
 
Sarah Tully (East Aurora) and Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) each scored 14 points. Tully hit 6-of-10 shots and pulled down seven rebounds. Travers made two 3-pointers and had five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) totaled 10 points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists.
 
Fredonia (3-9, 0-7 SUNYAC) was led by Renee Park's 12 points and Amber Louis' 11 points. Alena Wright led the Blue Devils with seven rebounds and three assists.
 
Fredonia controlled much of the action in the first half, leading for more than 17 of the half's 20 minutes while Cortland led for just 25 seconds. Fredonia held a 20-15 lead after one quarter and was up 32-30 before a Travers jumper 45 seconds before halftime knotted the game at 32-32.
 
Longford exploded for 13 of her 17 points in the third quarter to help Cortland take control. During a stretch midway through the period she accounted for 11 straight points for the Red Dragons, including all three of her 3-pointers, as Cortland extended a 39-37 lead to 50-42. With the lead at 54-46, Cortland outscored the guests 8-2 over the final 1:47 of the quarter, starting with a Miedreich 3-point play and a Travers 3-pointer and capped by two Miedreich free throws, to take a 62-48 lead. Cortland put the game away after scoring the first 16 points of the fourth quarter.
 
After shooting 35 percent in the first half, Cortland shot 53 percent in the second half to finish at 44 percent. The Red Dragons made only 1-of-9 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes but hit 7-of-12 treys in the second half. Fredonia shot 44 percent in the first half and finished at 41 percent.
 
Cortland hosts Buffalo State in league action Saturday at 2 p.m.
