WBB: Cook records double-double in setback at Southern Maine

 

GORHAM, Maine The Plymouth State University women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Southern Maine, 68-46, in a Little East Conference (LEC) game at Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.

After a low-scoring first quarter the Huskies put up 21 points in the second to build a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. The Panthers, playing for the first time in nearly three weeks, closed out the third quarter to pull within 12, but Southern Maine bunkered down to secure the conference win.

Senior Jalen Cook (Monkton, Vt.) led the way with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Sophie George (Meredith, N.H.) added a team-high 14 points in the losing effort. Junior Sabrina Vlahovic (New Hope, Pa.) brought down ten rebounds for the Panthers.

Plymouth State slips to 4-7 (0-5 LEC), while the Huskies improve to 4-6 and 2-2 in conference action.

How it Happened:

  • Plymouth State scored the game's first bucket midway through the first quarter.
  • Both teams traded points as the Panthers held a narrow, 7-6 lead with 1:47 on the clock.
  • The Huskies knocked down a three-pointer as time expired to close out the first with a 9-7 advantage.
  • USM extended the margin to 14 points, 30-16, as they outscored the Panthers by a 21-9 margin in the second quarter.
  • The Huskies' lead grew to 19 with 4:18 left in the third quarter, before Plymouth State used a 10-3 run to pull within 44-32 to close out the frame.
  • USM rebuilt the advantage, though, and never looked back.

By the Numbers:

  • The Panthers went 16-of-60 (26.7%) from the floor and 3-of-18 (16.7%) from three.
  • PSU outrebounded the Huskies, 44-43, with each team recording 15 offensive boards.
