WBB: UMass Dartmouth cruises past Panthers

 

PLYMOUTH, N.H. The Plymouth State University women's basketball team was defeated by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 90-59, in a Little East Conference (LEC) game at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

It was a two-possession game after the first quarter, but the Corsairs scored 25 points in both the second and third quarters to extend a lead that became too large for the Panthers to overcome.

PSU had three players score in double digits as senior Sarah Sweet (Narragansett, R.I.) led the way with 16 points. Classmate Jalen Cook (Monkton, Vt.) added 12 points of her own, while freshman Sophie George (Meredith, N.H.) scored 11 points in the losing effort.

Plymouth State falls to 4-6 (0-4 LEC), while the Corsairs improve to 4-5 and 1-1 in conference play.

How it Happened:

  • The Corsairs opened play with a 12-0 run over the first 4:58 of game time.
  • Plymouth State used a 9-2 run of its own to cut the score to 14-9 with 3:18 remaining in the first.
  • UMD maintained a five-point lead, 18-13, after one.
  • The Corsairs reopened a double-digit lead at 36-25 with 3:36 remaining in the second quarter.
  • UMD closed out the half on a 12-2 run to take a 43-27 advantage into the locker room.
  • The Panthers were held to one field goal in the first four minutes of the third to trail 54-29.
  • PSU was outscored 25-19 in the third quarter, finding themselves down 68-46 after three.
  • The Corsairs kept their foot on the gas in the fourth to close out their first conference victory.

By the Numbers:

  • The Panthers went 20-of-61 (32.8%) from the floor and 5-of-20 (25.0%) from three.
  • UMD outrebounded the Panthers, 40-37, but PSU owned a 15-13 edge on the offensive glass.
  • The Corsairs scored 24 points on the fast break.
  • Plymouth State had a season high 22 bench points in the game.
  • PSU scored more second chance points, 16-11.
  • The Corsairs took 28 free throws to PSU's 18.
  • Plymouth State still holds the all-time series over the Corsairs, 39-36, but has lost each of the last six meetings.
