Cortland Women Win at Potsdam for Eighth Straight Victory

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Cortland limited Potsdam to 13 points and 13 percent shooting in the second half to overcome a halftime deficit and the Red Dragons defeated the host Bears, 60-44, in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest. 
 
Cortland picked up its eighth straight win to improve to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the league. The Red Dragons are among the "others receiving votes" section of the latest D3hoops.com national Top 25. Potsdam is now 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC
 
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) finished with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals for the Red Dragons. She was 7-for-10 from the field, 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) made 6-of-11 shots and finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two assists. 
 
Maggie Malone (Cornwall) and Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) each scored 10 points, with Malone also adding four steals and two blocks. Julia Siler (Seaford) dished out a career-best six assists and Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) pulled down eight rebounds. 
 
Jakia Howard led Potsdam with 13 points and eight rebounds. Jenna Cotter totaled nine points, eight rebounds and four blocks and Mandy Barnell had six rebounds, three blocks and three assists. 
 
Cortland led 15-7 late in the first quarter, but Potsdam scored the final six points of the period to close within two. The teams were basically even much of the second quarter, with the Bears opening a slight 31-28 halftime lead, and Potsdam still led by three, 35-32, on two Barnell free throws with 7:01 left in the third quarter. 
 
Cortland, however, finished the third quarter on a 16-4 run to take a 48-39 lead. Potsdam's only points during that stretch came on free throws. Miedreich scored six points and Morano had five during the run for the Red Dragons. Potsdam was within eight at 52-44 with five minutes left in the game on a Carley Hill 3-pointer, but Cortland held the Bears scoreless the rest of the way. Malone hit a 3-pointer with 3:33 left to extend the lead to 11, and Cortland's final points came in the last minute on a Siler jumper and a Malone 3-pointer. Potsdam made only 3-of-24 field goals in the second half. 
 
Cortland returns to action with two non-league games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Dec. 19 and 20. The Red Dragons will face Christopher Newport (Va.) on the 19th at 8 p.m. and Dickinson (Pa.) on the 20th at 5 p.m. Christopher Newport is currently 9-0 and ranked second nationally by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and fifth by D3hoops.com.
