Second-Half Surge Pushes No. 15/16 Springfield College Past Worcester State, 66-29

Worcester, Mass. - December 6, 2022 - The Springfield College women's basketball team outscored Worcester State by a 37-10 margin in the final 20 minutes of play as it ran away with a 66-29 non-conference victory on Tuesday evening. 

The Pride entered the game ranked 15th in the country in the latest D3hoops.com National poll and 16th in the WBCA Division III Coaches Poll and improved to 7-1 with the triumph.  The loss dropped Worcester State to 4-5 this season.

Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) was dynamic for the Pride in the win as she netted a career-high 23 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-6 from deep, to go along with eight assists.  Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) pulled down 12 rebounds and Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) contributed eight points and eight rebounds off the bench.  The Pride was able to turn 18 Worcester State turnovers into 20 points and finished the night with a 51-32 advantage on the glass. For the game, Springfield held Worcester State to just 11-of-59 shooting, including on 3-of-24 from beyond the arc. 

The hosts held a 7-4 lead with 4:14 remaining in the opening quarter, only to have the Pride close out the frame on an 11-0 surge to take a 15-7 advantage into the second quarter. The Lancers would pull within 20-14 following a triple with 6:54 remaining in the half, but Springfield would score the next seven points, capped off by an inside finish by Leary at 4:13 to make it a 27-14 contest.   Springfield would eventually go into the break with a 29-19 lead.

Springfield scored the first nine points of the third quarter to go up 38-19 following a layup from Jaélen Daubon (Hyde Park, N.Y.), who would score all 10 of her points in the stanza.  All told, the Pride put the game away in the third as it outscored Worcester State 23-6 to break the game wide open.  In the fourth, Springfield's defense held the hosts to just four points and Vinton's fifth trifecta of the night inside the final two minutes of the game allowed the Pride to earn its largest lead of the night at 66-29.

Springfield will play another road game on Sunday when it heads to Emmanuel for a 2 pm tilt.
