Christopher Newport Women's Basketball Downs Greensboro, 91-73, in Saturday Afternoon Tilt

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team stayed unbeaten with a 91-73 win at Greensboro College (3-2) on Saturday afternoon, behind a dominant performance from the starting five. The Captains' starters scored 67 of the 91 total points in the game including a season-high 21 by Sondra Fan and a third-consecutive double-double by Anaya Simmons

CNU improved to 8-0 on the season with the victory after shooting 46.2 percent from the field (30-65). After a back-and-forth first half, the Captains stormed out of the intermission break on a big run, extending the lead to as many as 21 in the third quarter. CNU paired an 11-2 spurt at the end of the first half with a 13-0 roll to open the second to build a 63-42 lead with 5:47 remaining in the period. 

The Captains took seven shots in the second half before Greensboro could muster even one as the defense ratcheted up the pressure and the front court dominated the offensive glass. CNU snagged three steals in the first three possessions by the Pride and also grabbed three offensive rebounds in the first 1:24 of the second half. 

Simmons had a big second half and finished with a career-high 17 rebounds to pair with her 17 points, becoming the first CNU player with three straight double-doubles since Sam Porter in 2016. She was a catalyst during the 24-2 run, scoring six points and snagging five rebounds in the stretch, which lasted just over six and a half minutes of game time. 

The Captains' senior forward finished 6-for-8 from the field and her teammate in the paint, Hannah Kaloi, added a 7-for-9 performance up front as the Captains controlled close to the basket. Kaloi finished with 15 points and five rebounds in the game. 

At one of the starting guard spots, Sondra Fan finished with a season-high 21 points and made five three-pointers in the game. She passed Porter on the all-time scoring chart and now sits in 16th all-time with 1,170 career points, just six shy of Camry Green for a spot in the top-15. Fan also had four steals and four assists while grabbing three rebounds in the game. 

At point guard, Gabbi San Diego filled the stat sheet in one of her finest performances of the year. She scored 11 points and dished out eight assists. She added a game-high six steals as Christopher Newport collected 15 as a team in the game. Katy Rader rounded out the starting five with three points and four rebounds as the first five scored 73.6 percent of the Captains points in the game. 

Off the bench, fifth-year senior Lauren Fortescue led the way with nine points and two steals while Camille Malagar added six points while Hannah Orloff had four. Ashley Steadman buried a triple to end the first half for three points and Alivia Giles snagged four rebounds to go with her two points in the contest. 

The Captains, ranked No. 2 in the WBCA Top 25 and No. 5 in the D3hoops.com national rankings, will now take an eight-day break for final exams before returning to action next Sunday, December 11 at 2:00 p.m. against N.C.
