More news about: Plattsburgh State

ONEONTA, N.Y. - Despite some strong defense throughout the game, the Plattsburgh State women's basketball team fell to Oneonta State on the road in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup, as the Red Dragons used a big third-quarter to propel themselves to a 21-point win. Leading by nine points at halftime, Oneonta outscored the Cardinals 17-6 in the third to build a big lead heading into the fourth quarter and secure a win.

Plattsburgh had three players make multiple field goals, as Jaden Wilson (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) and Koree Stillwell (Au Sable Forks, N.Y./ AuSable Valley) each contributed six points to the Cardinal cause, with Stillwell knocking down both of her three-point attempts for a new career high. Imani Walcott (Albany, N.Y./Albany) had two made field goals as well, ending up with four points and five rebounds for Plattsburgh State. Meg Nardelli was the game's leading scorer, as the senior guard hit three three-pointers en route to 13 points for Oneonta.

Both teams struggled to shoot throughout the game, as Plattsburgh shot just 21% from the floor and 16% from three. Oneonta shot just 30% from the floor but was able to turn second chances and turnovers into points, as they produced 13 second-chance points and 15 points off turnovers. Despite Plattsburgh forcing one more turnover than the Red Dragons, the Cards were only able to get four points off turnovers throughout the game.

Plattsburgh State now moves to 3-4 on the season and will match up with SUNY New Paltz tomorrow, Dec. 3 at 2 pm. The Hawks soundly defeated Potsdam today, 77-47, who the Cardinals fell to on Tuesday night. The Red Dragons will face Potsdam tomorrow, Dec. 3, as they rise to 4-3 with the win on Friday night.

The game gave an early look at how the rest of the night would play out, as the first three minutes of the game were scoreless between the two teams. The scoring opened with a Red Dragon layup at the 7:09 mark, which set off a very close first quarter. Plattsburgh tied the game at 10 points apiece with 2:32 to go in the first period thanks to a Walcott layup, but that would be the last time Oneonta would not lead in the game. Nardelli knocked down a three on the next possession, setting off a 45-24 Red Dragon run to close out the contest.

The third quarter sealed the win for Oneonta as they contrasted a 3-14 Cardinal effort from the field with a 6-15 showing, including two threes to distance themselves from Plattsburgh State. The fourth period saw Plattsburgh keep the game close once again, only being outscored 11-10 in the quarter, but by then the deficit was too much to overcome. Stillwell knocked down both of her three-point attempts in the fourth period to set a new career-high.

The Cardinals will look to remedy their recent offensive woes with a trip to New Paltz to matchup with last year's SUNYAC champs as the Cards will look to snap a 13 game losing streak to the Hawks.
