Cortland Women Hot from the Start in 102-45 Blowout at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Cortland raced out to a 35-10 lead after one quarter and the Red Dragons cruised past host Fredonia, 102-45, in SUNYAC women's basketball action. Cortland's 102 points are its highest total since a 103-62 win at SUNYIT in January 2008. 
 
Emily Morano (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) led the Red Dragons (5-1, 2-0 SUNYAC) with 21 points and nine rebounds in just 19 minutes. She was 8-of-12 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Corinne Miedreich (Pearl River) hit 5-of-8 shots and ended with 14 points in 13 minutes. Maggie Malone (Cornwall) and Lily Woodis (Mayville/Chautauqua Lake) each finished with nine points and Flo Hunte (Elmont/Sewanhaka) tallied eight points. Malone was 4-of-5 from the floor. 
 
Logan Streety (Elma/Iroquois) totaled six points, on 3-of-3 shooting, and shared the team lead with nine rebounds. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) and Stef Gera (Auburn) also scored six points each. Hunte, Julia Siler (Seaford), Hailey Potenza (East Aurora) and Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) tied for the team lead with three assists apiece. 
 
Kyla Smith led Fredonia (3-4, 0-2 SUNYAC) with eight points and Laurell Brown scored six points. 
 
Cortland shot 61 percent from the field (41-of-67) overall and 48 percent (11-of-23) from the arc. The Red Dragons blistered the nets in the first quarter, hitting 15-of-18 shots overall (83 percent) and 5-of-6 treys. Cortland also shot 64 percent in the third quarter and 65 percent in the fourth. Cortland led 15-1 less than four minutes into the game and 50-23 at halftime. The Red Dragons reached the century mark by scoring nine points in the final two minutes, the first five from Brianna Cinque (Staten Island/Tottenville), followed by a Potenza 3-pointer that pushed the total to 101 and a Woodis free throw to close out the scoring. 
 
Defensively, Cortland held Fredonia to 19 percent shooting from the field. The Blue Devils connected on 17-of-20 free throws, and six of their 11 field goals were 3-pointers. 
 
Cortland travels to Brockport Saturday for a 3 p.m. league game.
