READING, Pa. - The Hood College women's basketball team took the lead early and never looked back in a 67-52 win over Penn State Berks.

  • Na'Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) recorded 16 points in her first career start. The first-year student shot 57 percent from behind the 3-point line going 4-7. 
  • Tam Stanford (Baltimore, Md./Our Lady of Mount Carmel) scored in double figures for the second straight game with 10 points on 5-for-10 shooting.
  • Philippa Clouse (Olney, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. The senior also had three blocked shots.
  • Lele Wright (Wilmington, Del./Howard) dished out seven assists in the game and had eight rebounds. 

How it Happened

  • Hood used a 15-5 run over almost the entirety of the fourth quarter to pull away 67-52. 
  • The Blazers opened the game with a 10-4 run over the first five minutes of action. Hood hit 5-of-9 field goals, including four points apiece by Stanford and Wright, while forcing five Berks turnovers. 
  • Lyla Spencer got the Nittany Lions within four 12-8, scoring back-to-back buckets mid-way through the first period.
  • Clouse closed the opening period with four of the final six Blazer points, ending the first period with the advantage 18-10.
  • Hood started the second period on a 8-0 run that saw Quarles hit two straight 3-point jumpers for a 26-10 lead with 8:04 left.
  • Penn State Berks answered with a 11-2 run of its own, cutting Hood's lead to 28-21. Spencer scored eight of those points, as she accounted for 12 of the Nittany Lions' first 21 points.  
  • Quarles hit her third 3-pointer of the period for the Blazers final points of the half for a 36-29 lead.
  • The Nittany Lions cut Hood's lead to five 36-31, but the Blazers answered with a 9-2 run to push the lead back up to 45-33 midway through the third period. 
  • Hood led 52-44 heading into the fourth quarter before going on its game-sealing run.

Analysis

  • Hood held the field goal percentage advantage 36 percent to the Golden Eagles  31 percent.
  • The Blazers outrebounded Penn State Berks 54-35.
  • Hood grabbed 18 offensive rebounds in the contest and held an 18-5 edge in second chance points.  
  • PSU Berks got to the free throw line more than twice as many times as the Blazers but failed to capitalize, going just 15-of-28 (54 percent). Hood went 7-for-11 at the foul line.

  • Spencer led the Nittany Lions with 20 points and added five steals.
  • Jalyn Hann notched 10 rebounds in the game. 
  • Lekaiah Solomon ended the night with four steals.
