No.16/20 Springfield College Pulls Away From Gordon

Springfield, Mass. - November 19, 2022 - The Springfield College women's basketball program earned a 68-57 win over Gordon College on Saturday afternoon in Blake Arena. 

The Pride pick up its fourth win of the season to improve to 4-1 on the year, while Gordon loses its third-straight game. Springfield shot 24-of-49 from the field for 49% and earned a huge effort from its bench as it outscored Gordon, 24-6 in that regard.

Stefany Padula (Franklin, Mass.) was lights out as the first-year shot 5-of-6 from beyond the arch for a team-high 15 points. Five players scored eight or more points for Springfield in the contest. Kayla Madden (Ashland, Mass.) registered nine points and five steals, while Rachel Vinton (Rutland, Mass.) put together an all-out effort with six points, 10 rebounds, six assists, and three steals.

Madison Wynbeek tallied a game-high 17 points for Gordon.  

Springfield jumped out to a 7-0 lead with just under eight minutes left in the quarter courtesy of back-to-back threes from Madden and Padula. Gordon started chipping away at the lead as the Scots raced to a 16-4 run that went all the way to the two-minute mark in the first quarter and was capped off by a three-pointer from Naomi Nicholson, which gave Gordon a 16-11 lead. A couple fast break finishes to end the quarter allowed Springfield to close the gap to 18-15 headed into the second stanza. 

The Pride regained the lead in the second as Vinton finished in transition to make it a 21-20 game with 5:38 to go in the half. Springfield used three-straight threes including two from Padula to push its lead to 30-25 with 2:58 to go. The Scots were able to cut the deficit to 33-31 with 1:24 to play, however Angela Czeremcha (West Springfield, Mass.) finished through contact off a high-low feed from Madden to put the Pride ahead 36-31 before the half ended. 

Gordon slowly made a comeback to start the third quarter and earned a 43-40 lead after a triple from Nicholson with 4:03 to play in the quarter. Each team traded baskets and could not take more than a two-point lead over the final four minutes of the quarter. After Gordon went ahead 47-45 with 16 seconds to go, Padula drilled another three to beat the horn and give the Pride a one-point lead before the fourth. 

In the fourth, Emma Glaser (Norfolk, Mass.) provided an intial spark to let Springfield take a 53-50 lead with 8:35 in the game, however, the Scots brought it witin one with transition bucket from Madison Wynbeek. At 5:26, Jaélen Daubon (Hyde Park, N.Y.) canned a three on the left wing to put Springfield ahead 60-57. The three by Daubon jumpstarted Springfield's 11-0 run to finish off the victory as the Pride knocked down eight-consecutive free throws to take the win. 

Springfield will play again next Tuesday against Williams at 4:00 in Blake Arena.
