#3 NYU Downs Haverford to Conclude Tip-Off Classic

Belle Pellecchia's 24 points led New York University's third-ranked women's basketball team to an 85-74 victory over Haverford College on Sunday in the finale of the 2022 NYU Tip-Off Classic at the Brooklyn Athletic Facility.

Pellecchia was tabbed Classic MVP for the second consecutive season as she, Jenny WalkerNatalie Bruns, Alvernia University's Jordan Karmonic, and Haverford's Ally Landau were named to the All-Classic Team.

Both Walker (21 points, 12 rebounds) and Bruns (14 points, 12 rebounds) contributed double-doubles in today's victory as NYU improved to 2-0 on the young season.

A fastbreak layup from Cortlyn Morris put the Fords up 9-6 with 6:18 to play in the first, testing NYU early on. Pellecchia converted an and-one late in the period to give the Violets a 20-17 lead. But, Landau scored five points in the final 45 seconds, including a long-range heave at the buzzer, as the visitors held a 22-20 advantage after the first.

Another Morris bucket tied the score at 30-30 halfway through the second quarter as back-and-forth play continued. With things knotted at 36-36 late in the frame, Walker converted two shots on both of her trips to the foul line for the only points of the final 1:46 as NYU led 40-36 at halftime.

The game remained close for the majority of the third until the Violets mounted a 9-1 run to take a 59-50 edge with 1:33 left on the clock. NYU went on to lead 61-53 entering the fourth.

NYU led by as many as 16 points early in the fourth, but Haverford kept fighting and eventually came within two, 72-70, after Kayla Robinson's layup with 2:33 to play. A Bruns and-one later gave the Violets a 77-70 cushion which forced the Fords to foul and NYU converted all six of its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Pellecchia shot 9-of-18 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the stripe for her game-high-tying 24 points, along with six rebounds, five assists, a block, and a steal.

Walker was 6-of-10 from the field and 9-of-11 from the line for her 21 points, adding 12 boards, two blocks, an assist, and a steal.

Bruns finished with 6-of-12 shooting (2-of-3 FT), 12 rebounds, four blocks and a steal. Erica Miller added nine points on a trio of long-range jumpers.

NYU won the battle of the boards 53-41 and held Haverford to 33.3 percent shooting from the floor.

Next up is the Violets' first road game of the season, heading to Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Friday, November 18.
