No. 16/20 Springfield College Bounces Back With Win Over Rowan

Amherst, Mass. - November 12, 2022 - The Springfield College women's basketball program takes a 58-53 win against Rowan on the second day of the Amherst College Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon. 

The Pride bounce back and improve to 2-1 on the season, Rowan drops to 0-1. In a game where neither team led by more than eight, the Pride converted on 15-of-20 from the free throw line and shot 18-of-48 from the floor for 37.5%. 

 Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) finished with 23 points to lead all scorers, while Kayla Madden (Ashland, Mass.) pitched in 11 points and was 4-for-4 from the line in the win. 

 Mycala Carney was Rowan's leading scorer with 10 points off the bench. 

Rowan came out the gate with an 8-2 run capped off by a three from Grace Marshall to give Rowan the early lead. Madden helped Springfield bring the game to a 12-9 score with 4:35 remaining, after scoring five-straight points for the Pride. Riley Robinson (Adams, Mass.) tied the game at 14-14 as the junior canned a triple with 3:34 to go. Springfield took its first lead of the game just before the end of the quarter as Vinton cashed in two from the charity stripe to put Springfield ahead at 18-17. 

At 7:01, Springfield forced a turnover which led to Czeremcha finding Vinton for the jumper to give the Pride a 23-17 edge. Springfield limited Rowan to just four points in the quarter, and 1-for-11 from the field, which allowed the Pride to extend its advantage to 29-21 entering the break.

Despite the poor shooting the second quarter, Rowan bounced back in the third outscoring Springfield, 20-14, however the Pride were able to keep a 43-41 lead with one quarter to play. Rowan took a 30-29 lead at the 5:05 mark, however Springfield used a 10-2 run to storm back regain the lead at 39-32 after a Stefany Padula (Franklin, Mass.) three with two minutes to go. Rowan clipped into the deficit over the final two minutes to bring it to 43-41 with the final period coming. 

Hourihan came out in the fourth lighting it up as the senior scored the Pride's first seven points of the quarter to Springfield up 51-44 with 6:47 to play. Rowan found a way to make a two-point game with 57 seconds following a steal that led to a score from Mycala Carney, however, Madden stuck a pair of clutch free throws to allow Springfield to keep its distance from Rowan and take the win. 

Springfield takes on Endicott on the road at 7 pm on Wednesday night.
