Nazareth Holds Off Swarthmore, 60-58

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Graduate student Jadyn Abrams hit a pair of free throws with :25 seconds remaining to give visiting Nazareth a one-point lead and the Golden Flyers held on to defeat Swarthmore 60-58 on Saturday afternoon in the Hochberg Family Tip-off Tournament. Abrams was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts.
 
After Nazareth built a 13-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, Swarthmore was able to chip away at the lead, eventually hitting a 3-pointer with :36 seconds remaining to gain a 58-57 lead. It was their first lead since the 5:18 mark of the second quarter when they led 21-20.
 
The very next possession, Abrams drove to the hoop and drew a foul, drilling both free throws to give the Golden Flyers the lead for good at 59-58. Following an empty trip for the Garnet, freshman Kiara Anglin hit one-of-two free throws for the final points of the game. Swarthmore missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer with two seconds on the clock.
 
Swarthmore led 16-15 after the opening quarter behind nine points from Abrams. She was 3-for-4, including drilling a 3-pointer. The graduate student led all scorers with 19 points on 6-for-13 shooting, including 3-for-7 from 3-point range.
 
The Golden Flyers shot nearly 50 percent in the opening half, going 12-for-25. They finished the game 20-for-53 (37.7 percent).
 
Over the final three minutes of the second, Nazareth outscored Swarthmore 8-2 to take a 33-27 lead into the half. Caley Cornwell scored five of her nine points of the half in the second quarter.
 
In the third, Nazareth was able to build its largest lead of the game at 49-33 with 2:36 on the clock, following a layup from Katie MacLachlan. The lead was 51-38 heading to the fourth.
 
Freshman Brielle Reidinger was 5-for-12 from the field for 12 points while also pulling down six rebounds. Classmate Anglin had seven points and nine boards.
 
Nazareth will be back in action on Thursday for the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Challenge. The Golden Flyers will square off against RIT at 6 p.m. at the University of Rochester.
