Lakers Win 2022 Max Ziel Basketball Tournament

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Women's Basketball team tipped off against the SUNY Poly Wildcats this afternoon on the final day of the Max Ziel Women's Basketball Tournament. Oswego was able to hold off the Wildcats late in the fourth quarter to secure the 2022 Max Ziel Championship. 

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 65 (3-0), SUNY Poly 64 (0-3)

Location: Max Ziel Gymnasium, Oswego, NY

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lakers were able to control the glass, grabbing 14 rebounds in the quarter. However, they still were not able to convert on their field goal attempts.

  • Poly shot over 43% in the first quarter, which helped them possess a 3 point lead going into the second quarter. 

  • Oswego would find their rhythm in the second quarter, opening up with a 13 point run to give them a 27-17 lead over the Wildcats.

  • SUNY Poly would rally back, and cut the deficit to just 4 with a buzzer beater at the end of the first half; Oswego would lead 33-29.

  • The Lakers had two double-digit scorers at the half, Logan Castiglione (14) and Chastin Giles (10). Julia Logana would lead the Lakers with 6 rebounds at the half. 

  • Overall, the Lakers shot 40.6% from the field in the first, going 13 of 32; while shooting 45.5% from 3pt range, hitting 5 of 11 attempts. 

  • Karleigh Leo would be the story of the third quarter, catching fire and the Wildcats had no answer to Leo's success. 

  • Leo would hit four three-point shots in the quarter, adding a layup as well to give her 14 points in the third. 

  • The Lakers would pull away from the Wildcats, leading 59-48 at the end of the third.

  • Despite the offensive struggles from both teams, SUNY Poly would rally back in the fourth quarter of play. 

  • Oswego would convert on 20% of their field goal attempts in the quarter, going 0-7 beyond the arc as well. All while being outscored by the Wildcats 16-6.

  • Diamond Pickett was able to get the game winning bucket with 9 seconds remaining in the matchup. The Wildcats would turn the ball over on their last possession, with a steal by Elaina Johnson cementing the win for Oswego.

  • Karleigh Leo led the Lakers with 17 points this evening, shooting 6 of 13 on the night. Julia Logana and Elaina Johnson would lead Oswego with eight rebounds each. Shania Iglesias would finish with five assists, and two steals, both of which led the team.

The Lakers will stay at home to take on the Wells College Express on Wednesday, November 16th at 7pm. Oswego looks to remain undefeated on the season after back-to-back close matchups.
