Pioneers Open Season with Romp of MSOE

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's basketball team began its 2022-23 campaign with a convincing 85-31 victory over the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Oliva Rangel tallied 14 points in 17 minutes, while Allison Thompson pulled in eight rebounds.
 
The Pioneers (1-0) opened the season with a strong performance by the bench, outscoring the Raiders 52-17. Brooke Foster and Emilie Wizner connected for six three-pointers and 12 points each to lead the bench mob. Carroll shot 47.6% from the floor and 40% from three. The Carroll defense suffocated MSOE, forcing 35 turnovers, collecting 24 steals, and scoring 42 points off turnovers. MSOE only scored 10 points in the entire second half.
 
The Pioneers opened the game on a 6-0 run started with a Katie Evans (7 PTS, 3 AST, 3 REB, 4 STL) fast break layup. The Pioneers and Raiders played it close in the first quarter, with nine being the largest margin for the first nine minutes. Kate Christian (6 PTS, 3 AST, 4 REB) gave the Pios their first 10-point lead of the night with 1:35 to go in the first quarter. Foster and Rangel got hot in the second quarter, as the duo combined for 16 points on 5-8 shooting. With the help of free throws, Carroll pushed the halftime lead to 27 points.
 
Wizner connected on a three-pointer from Rangel to put Carroll up 51-21 early in the second half. Foster knocked down two more threes to help Carroll surpass MSOE by 40 in the third quarter. Katie Rohner (5 PTS, 3 REB) returned after a season-ending injury last season and put the Pios up 51 points with 2:05 left in the game. All 15 of the active Pioneers saw action in the game tonight, with everyone scoring.
 
Carroll's next contest is a re-match with the No. 4/No. 8 Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks on Friday, November 11. Carroll took down the Warhawks last season on New Year's Day in their first victory over a top-five-ranked team in school history.
