Senior and first-year lead Hood on Senior Day

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's basketball team fell to visiting Eagles of Eastern University in double overtime 78-71 in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action. 

Inside the Box Score   

  • Jenna Davis-Hans finished with a career-high 22 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while playing all 50 minutes of the game. The first-year added three assists and three steals. 
  • Morgan Anderson, playing on her Senior Day, had her seventh double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds to go with two blocked shots. 

How it Happened   

  • In double overtime, the teams traded leads three times in the first four minutes. A layup by Taryn Woodson sparked a 7-0 run to give the Eagles a seven-point lead, 76-69 with 21 seconds remaining in the game to put the game out of reach. 
  • The Eagles led 65-60 in overtime, when, with 59 seconds left, Marlise Newson found Anderson in the short corner to cut the Eastern lead to three points. Out of a Hood timeout with 20 seconds remaining, Bre Smith knocked down a 3-pointer in front of the Blazers' bench to send the game to a second overtime. 
  • After entering the fourth quarter tied, the two sides were still deadlocked at 50-50 with 1:40 left in the period. With 11 seconds remaining in the fourth, a layup by Harris gave the Eagles a two-point lead, but Davis-Hans answered right back with a game-tying layup with just five seconds to go at 54-54. Coming out of a timeout, a layup by Eastern's Woodson once again put the Eagles in front, 56-54, with four seconds remaining. Hood called timeout and advanced the ball to the frontcourt. Davis Hans found Anderson for an open layup to force the first overtime. Anderson scored 11 of her 21 points in the period. 
  • The scoring went silent for almost three minutes in the beginning of the third quarter before Eastern's Brynn Schmidt broke the scoreless drought with a jumper to cut the deficit to one point, 26-25 with 7:55 remaining. A layup by Newson at the 5:07 mark gave Hood its largest lead in the game at six points, 35-29. At the 4:28 mark, Ashya Gaddy scored a layup that led the Eagles to outscore the Blazers 11-5 to tie the score 40-40 to head into the fourth. Gaddy scored eight of her 18 points in the quarter. 
  • The teams exchanged the lead five times in the second quarter, the first of which came when Davis-Hans scored to give the Blazers their first lead of the game, 14-13 with 7:15 left. Davis-Hans and Jaelyn Harris powered their offenses over the next few minutes. Davis-Hans, who scored 10 points in the quarter, scored the Blazers' next four, but Harris had five for Eastern, who led 21-20 with 3:16 left. Hood held Eastern to just two more points the rest of the half, heading to the locker room ahead 26-23. 
  • In the first quarter, the Eagles' Harris sparked a 9-2 run over the opening five minutes. The Blazers outscored Eastern 8-4 over the rest of the period and trailed just 13-10 at the end of the quarter.  

Analysis   

  • The teams were evenly matched in rebounds, 44-44. 
  • Hood held a 27-17 advantage in points off turnovers.  

For the opponent   

  • Harris lead the Eagles with 24 points on 8-of-16 shooting. 
  • Woodson finished with 11 points, all in the second half and overtimes, and a game-high 16 rebounds. The first year also added seven steals and four blocks.  
  • Gaddy scored 18 points, going 7-of-14 from the field.
