Big Fourth quarter leads Women’s basketball past Wilson

FREDERICK, Md. - The Hood College women's basketball outscored Wilson 19-9 in the fourth quarter as the Blazers picked up a 62-49 win in non-conference action. 

 
Inside the Box Score   

  • Morgan Anderson led all players with 28 points and 17 rebounds. Anderson added five blocks and four steals. 

  • Marlise Newson finished with 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The junior handed out eight assists and six steals. 

How it Happened 

  • The Blazers scored six straight points in the first three minutes of the first quarter. Wilson's Naomi Hanton answered back with six straight points of her own to tie the game 6-6 with 4:20 remaining in the period. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter and headed into the second quarter tied at 12-12. 

  • In the second quarter, a layup by Jenna Davis-Hans started a 17-5 run. A pair of layups by Bre Smith and Anderson capped the run and stretched Hood's lead to 12 points, 29-17, with 2:08 remaining. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Wilson's Amanda Smida cut the deficit to six points at the 1:03 mark and Hood was forced to settle for a 29-23 halftime lead. 

  • Both teams continued to trade baskets in the first three minutes of the third quarter before an 11-3 run swung the momentum in Phoenix's favor.  Samira Murphy converted an and-one with 2:50 left in the period to give Wilson its first lead, 40-38.  

  • The teams then swapped the lead four times in the next four minutes. Anderson scored 10 points during a run that lasted from 1:21 in the third quarter until 2:44 remained in the contest. The 20-7 surge gave the Blazers a 58-47 lead.  

Analysis 

  • Hood held the advantage 50-37 in rebounds and 36-26 in points in the paint. 

  • The Blazers led the Phoenix 17-7 in second chance points. 

 
 

For the opponent  

  • Hanton led the Phoenix with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting and added eight rebounds. 

  • Tioleaoauli Posiulai grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds. 
     

Notes 

  • Hood improved to 6-13 overall, while Wilson slipped to 9-8.
