The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team totaled a season high in points scored and wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule Sunday afternoon with a 99-49 victory against Lake Forest (Ill.) at Kachel Gymnasium.

 

The Warhawks (18-2 overall) shot 48.1 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Foresters 49-27, including a 24-5 margin in offensive rebounds. UW-W also forced 34 turnovers in the contest.

 

Aleah Grundahl and Veronica Kieres each finished with 13 points to pace UW-Whitewater. Maggie Trautsch tallied 11 points and three steals, and Johanna Taylor collected 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

 

A total of 19 players saw action in the game for the Warhawks, who also finished with advantages in points off turnovers (43-19), points in the paint (62-20), second-chance points (20-3) and fast break points (20-7).

 

UW-Whitewater scored the first seven points of the contest, increased its lead to double digits and never trailed. Lake Forest (5-12) cut the UW-W lead to nine just past the midway point of the first quarter, but the Warhawks ran off the next 15 points for a 32-8 advantage just under the 2:00 mark of the first quarter.

 

UW-W maintained its 24-point lead into the second quarter. The Foresters broke a two-minute scoreless streak for both teams with a bucket at the 7:41 mark, and the two teams traded baskets until the Warhawks took a 25-point lead, their largest to that point, on a 3-pointer by Rebekah Schumacher with 4:20 remaining.

 

UW-Whitewater pushed its 50-25 halftime advantage to 30 by the midway point of the third quarter. The team continued to build on its lead and held a 76-40 margin thank to a last-second floater by Rebecca Schauer to end the period.

 

Schauer, Mallory Oloffson, Erin Adams and Kendall Roquet combined for 17 of UW-W's 23 points in the fourth quarter, when the team shot 40 percent from the floor.

 

The Warhawks return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday by hosting UW-La Crosse. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.
