The Springfield College women's basketball program rolled to a 73-18 victory against Wellesley College in New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon in Blake Arena.
Springfield, came into the game ranked 10th in the Women's Basketball Association (WBCA) Division III National Coaches' Poll and 15th in the D3hoops.com National Top 25 poll, improves to a perfect 16-0 on the season. The Blue fall to 3-10. Springfield shot 51% from the field on 29-of-56 from the field and owned a plus-31 rebounding margin over the vistors.
Sam Hourihan (Bridgewater, Mass.) lead all scorers with 16 points to go along with nine rebounds, and three blocks. Grace Dzindolet (Holliston, Mass.) chipped in 11 points and was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, while Stephanie Lyons (Boston, Mass.) netted 10 points for the Pride.
Anna Greenthal led the Blue with nine points and six rebounds in the setback.
At 6:22 in first quarter, Taylor Hirn made the contest a one point game early with a layup inside, which made the score 7-6 in favor of Springfield. Following the make from Hirn, Hourihan knocked down a three that sparked a 13-0 run to close the quarter. The scoring burst was capped off as Jaelen Daubon (Hyde Park, N.Y.) connected with Wentland for the jumper to make the score 20-6 after the first stanza.
The Springfield lead grew to 21 in the second quarter as Summer Matlack (Arlington, Va.) found Dzindolet for the spot up three, which expanded the lead to 31-10. The Pride used another 13-3 scoring spurt that was highlighted by a basket through contact from Matlack and another three from Dzindolet to go into the break with a 44-13 cushion.
Springfield continued to roll in the second half as the Pride limited the Blue offensively to just one basket in the third quarter. Springfield shot 11-of-22 in the second half and increased its lead to as many as 55 when Kayla Madden (Ashland, Mass.) knocked down a jumper with 1:26 left in the contest as Springfield cruised to the victory.
Springfield will now prepare for a road game against MIT on Wednesday, January 26 at 6:00.
