Stout's defense overpowers the Pioneers to secure a 60-45 win

MENOMONIE (January 8, 2022) - The Blue Devil's stifling defense and Amanda Giesen's hot shooting were the key to victory against UW-Platteville on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Fieldhouse. The Blue Devils were able to hold Platteville to only 45 points. The last time the Blue Devils held a team to under 50 points was the season opener against UW-Superior where the Yellow Jackets scored only 44 points.

The first quarter was a low scoring affair, but Stout didn't hide the game plan as they put the clamps on the Platteville offense right from the jump. Stout came out on top leading 8-2 after the first. Platteville was only about to find the bottom of the net once in the first quarter, shooting 10-percent (1 for 10) from the floor.

The second quarter was more lively, as the Pioneers started to mount a comeback. Platteville took the lead, 15-14, with 4 minutes left in the quarter, but Stout went on a 10-1 run to close out the half, pulling ahead by eight (24-16) heading into the break.

Stout continued to put the pressure on the Pioneers in the second half, adding to their lead. Amanda Giesen was a huge part of this, scoring 14 of a career-high 18 points in the second half. Giesen was also called upon to guard Maiah Domask, the WIAC leading scorer and rebounder. Giesen did a stellar job at that holding Domask to only 11 points (5-13 FG).

Anna Mutch had another all-around great game with nine points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Raegan Sorensen and Lizzy Olsem both finished with eight points and four rebounds. Olsem also had a season-high three assists.

Stout was able to connect on nearly 50-percent of their shots, going 27 for 56 from the floor. Platteville was unable to connect on their shots going 38-percent (18 for 47). From deep, both teams struggled throughout the first three quarters until Allison Letcher connected from deep at the beginning of the fourth. Lauren Arenz was then able to connect on two more three-balls later in the fourth quarter. Stout also heavily out-rebounded the Pioneers 37 to 24.
