CWRU Sets Program Records with 94-40 Win over Kenyon

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team concluded the 2021 portion of its schedule on Saturday afternoon, ending the year on a high note with a 94-40 win over Kenyon College at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The 54-point margin of victory was the largest in a game in program history.

The Spartans improved to 4-6 overall with the win, while Kenyon dropped to 3-8.

The 54-point win surpassed an 83-31 win over Notre Dame College during the 1982-83 season for the largest win in program history.  CWRU also set a program record by shooting 60.7% from the floor on Saturday, besting the previous record mark of 56.4% against NYU on February 4, 2018.

The 94 points marked a season-high for the Spartans, and was the third time this season that CWRU has cleared the 90-point mark in a game. The Spartans finished the game with a dominating 45-23 edge in rebounds as well.

Senior guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence led all players with 26 points on Saturday, shooting 10-of-13 from the floor and two-of-two from behind the three-point line, while adding five rebounds and three steals. She was one of five Spartan players in double figures, with junior guard/ forward Isabella Mills tallying 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds, along with four assists and three steals, and sophomore forward Kayla Characklis, junior guard McKenna Gross and first-year forward Evie Miller each scoring 10 points apiece.

With the game tied at 2-2 just a minute in, the Spartans launched on a 23-0 run to take a commanding lead over the Ladies and ended the first quarter with a 28-6 lead. All 10 of Characklis' points in the game came during CWRU's big run. The Spartans' added to their lead in the second period, opening up a 34-point advantage, 54-20, on a layup by sophomore forward Adrienne Wachtman with 2:19 left in the half, and headed into halftime with a 56-24 lead.

CWRU continued to build its lead throughout the second half, going ahead by 44, 72-28, on a layup by Lawrence with 3:41 to play in the third quarter, and closing out the period with a 41-point lead, 77-36. The Spartans outscored Kenyon 17-4 in the fourth quarter, and a free throw by sophomore guard/ forward Kennedy Boone-Sautter in the final minute of the game set the final score and gave CWRU its largest lead of the day.

CWRU's defense held Kenyon to just 28.1% shooting overall during the game, including 11.1% from behind the three-point line, and forced 25 turnovers, while registering 13 steals.

The Spartans will now be off for the holiday season, returning to action on Monday, January 3, when the team is slated to travel to Hamburg, New York for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff against Hilbert College.
