NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Continuing a trend of dominating offense and suffocating defensive pressure, the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport women's basketball team improved to 10-0 on the season with a 93-39 win over Marymount University on Sunday afternoon. The Captains closed a four-game homestand with an impressive showing to extend the team's win streak to 27 games.
Leading the charge was senior Sondra Fan, who continued her hot-shooting ways on Sunday with a 7-for-9 showing in just 14 minutes of action. Fan poured in 20+ points for the second straight game and finished with a season-high 21 despite only seeing three minutes of action after halftime. Her efficient shooting effort including a 5-for-7 mark from beyond the arc, setting a career-high for three-pointers made in a game. She becomes only the second player in the last eight seasons to score 20-points or more in back-to-back games, joining Kiana Kirkland who accomplished the feat during the 2018-19 season.
Over the four-game homestand, Fan averaged 20.5 points per game while knocking down 73.2% of her shots (30-41). Enjoying the friendly confines of the Freeman Center, Fan was exceptional from long range, burying 14 triples in 21 attempts for 66.7% efficiency on three-pointers. She helped carry the Captains to four straight wins at home as CNU outscored their opponents by an average of 51 points per game.
In Sunday's runaway victory, the Captains utilized impressive shooting as a group and a stifling defensive effort in the second half against the Saints. Christopher Newport held Marymount to just 3-for-23 shooting in the second half and 13 points scored after the intermission. On the other end, the Captains knocked down 53.3% (16-30) and scored 40 points with all but eight coming from the CNU reserves.
Katy Rader had a stellar game running the offense, leading the team in minutes played of the bench and filling the stat sheet. The junior guard was 3-for-5 from the floor and finished with seven points. She dished out three assists, grabbed a pair of steals, blocked two shots, and grabbed a rebound while leading the Captains' bench. The nine players off the bench scored 43 points led by nine from Jessica Foster, eight by rookie Hannah Kaloi, and seven from Hannah Orloff.
While the reserves handled the second half, the Captains starting five raced out to a big lead early. With less than four minutes expired, the high-paced CNU offense had opened up a double-digit lead, 13-0, before Marymount finally got on the board. Off the opening tip, senior Natalie Terwilliger went to work, scoring the first four points and adding two layups and a blocked shot. Phylicia McInnis slammed in a triple off a dish by Gabbi San Diego and Julia Hobbs added a big offensive rebound and stick-back for the opening run.
In the second quarter, the three-point shooters caught fire. Fan buried two and Jessica Foster added one on the break as CNU started to pull away. By the end of the quarter, Fan was 4-for-5 from deep to lead a 7-for-11 team shooting performance from beyond the arc. She finished the second period with 14 points, a pair of assists, and two steals to lead a dominant 59.1% shooting performance as a team. Foster added a pair and San Diego sank one from long range as the three-pointer was key to CNU opening up a 53-26 advantage at the break.
After her three-pointer in the game-opening run, McInnis took on the role of distributor throughout the second quarter. She finished the game with a team-best and career-high six assists. She highlighted another excellent team performance passing the ball as CNU finished with 26 assists on 38 made baskets. San Diego added five while Lexi White, Jovia Winkey, and Rader each added three.
Senior Julia Hobbs also had a strong outing in just her second game of the season. She finished 2-for-3 with five rebounds and five points in 11 minutes as she works her way back into the rotation after an injury. Also upfront, Kaloi continued to showcase the Captains depth with eight points and six rebounds on 4-of-6 shooting.
The CNU defense forced 30 turnovers with 15 steals and seven blocked shots. It is the eighth time in ten games this season that the Captains have held their opponents to 60 points or fewer, improving to 8-0 in those matchups. Over the last five seasons, Christopher Newport has held their foes to 60 points or less 105 times, posting a 100-5 record.
There is a quick turnaround for the Captains as a nine-game road trip kicks off on Wednesday, December 15 at North Carolina Wesleyan College (4-6). Tip against the Battling Bishops is set for 3:00 pm.
