NJCU Women's Basketball Dominates Rutgers-Camden in Return to Court

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's basketball team, after a long hiatus from action, returned to the court in style today, Saturday, Dec. 4, with a dominant 70-39 victory over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Rutgers-Camden on its home Coach Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC).

Three players scored in double figures for the Gothic Knights (2-0, 1-2 NJAC) as sophomore Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) and and freshman Liyah Allen (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) both poured in a game-high 18 points. Rodriguez was 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from the floor, including 50.0 percent from three-point range (3-of-6) and was this close — once again — to another triple-double after leading all players with nine assists and pulling down a team-high-tying nine rebounds. Allen also grabbed a team-high-tying nine boards and was 8-of-12 shooting (66.7 percent) on the afternoon.

Another rookie, Taija'Ney McCollum (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) also chipped in double-figures against the Scarlet Raptors (0-7, 0-3 NJAC) off the bench with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting (75.0 percent) and 5-fo-6 from the line (83.3 percent). Junior Laney Fox (Parkland, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) finished the day with five points and five assists, but also grabbed a team-high-tying nine rebounds, while her classmate Jada Camacho (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) grabbed eight boards to fo with six points, four assists and a game-best five blocked shots. Another first-year junior Gothic Knight, Jimmirah Johnson (Prospect Park, N.J./International) chopped in eight points on 4-fo-6 shooting (66.7 percent).

Things got started quickly against Rutgers-Camden as NJCU jumped out to a 26-8 lead after the first quarter of play. The second quarter was a close one, 8-7 in favor of the Scarlet Raptors, but the Gothic Knights continued to dominate the ball in the second half, stretching their lead out to a game-high 33 points with just over two minutes remaining before winning by 31 and adding to the win column.
