PITTSFORD, N.Y.. - Rochester rediscovered its shooting touch in the second quarter and that propelled the Yellowjackets to an 80-54 women's basketball victory over Nazareth College in the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout at St. John Fisher College on Thursday evening. On Saturday, Rochester (4-1) will play Fisher at Fisher. Nazareth will take on RIT in the first game of that doubleheader.
UR hit just seven of 21 from the field in the opening 10 minutes. Nazareth, which made nine of 20 (45%) took a 19-15 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter, Caley Cornwell made a layup for a 21-15 edge. Rochester answered with 11 straight points to push ahead, 26-21. Julianna Okoniewski made a layup and two hook shots to lead the charge. Alexis Sestric and Calley McCulley made layups. Hannah Lindemuth was 1-2 from the line.
Naz gnawed back. Sabrina Wolfe made three free throws to get the Golden Flyers (1-3) within 30-28 with less than four minutes left 'til intermission. Rochester answered with eight quick points: a trey from the left wing by Charlotte Adler, a layup by McCulley, and another three-pointer, this one from Paige Gaynier. It was 38-29 at halftime.
The Yellowjackets pulled away slowly, trading two-for-one on baskets. In one sequence, with UR up 42-31, Kat Jenks hit an eight footer just outside the lane (44-31). Jadyn Adams drove for a layup for the Flyers. Jenks nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key, Adler sank a pair of free throws, then Haley Dumiak scored on a hook. It was 51-33 late in the third.
Hannah Lindemuth led Rochester with 15 points. She added four assists, one steal, and four rebounds. Okoniewski had 10 points and eight rebounds. Jenks had 10 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Adler had nine points. Jayda Starckey had a couple of clutch putbacks late in the second quarter as Naz was trying to get even. She finished with six points and six boards in eight minutes.
Wolfe led Nazareth with 21 points, hitting seven of 10 from the floor, six of eight at the line, with five rebounds and two steals. Abrams scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Rochester turned 20 offensive rebounds into 26 second-chance points. UR scored 19 points on 16 Naz turnovers. The Yellowjackets blocked seven shots and made 11 steals. McCulley had nine rebounds, three blocks, four steals, and four assists.
