Case Western Reserve University senior guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence turned in a historical performance on Tuesday night, scoring a school-record 45 points to lead the Spartans to a 91-67 win on the road over Waynesburg University.

The win was the second-straight for the Spartans, who improved to 2-2 overall on the season, while Waynesburg dropped to 0-2.

Lawrence's 45-point outburst broke the previous school record of 41 points, set by former Spartan Kara Hageman against Washington University (Mo.) on January 29, 2017. In addition, the 45 points match the most scored by an NCAA women's basketball game this season at any level (Division I, II or III).

Lawrence connected on 17-of-25 shots overall, also setting a new program record for field goals made in a game, besting Hageman's mark of 16, also set in the game against WashU in 2017. Lawrence went three-of-eight from behind the three-point line and added an eight-of-nine performance from the charity stripe. She also finished with six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Lawrence spread her scoring fairly evenly throughout the game, scoring 12 points in the first quarter, 10 in the second, 14 in the third and nine in the fourth.

Junior guard McKenna Gross added a season-high 15 points in the CWRU victory, connecting on five-of-seven attempts from behind the three-point line. Sophomore forward Preet Gill came off the bench to lead all Spartan players with a career-best nine rebounds, and sophomore Margaret Terry notched a team-high six assists off the bench.

A pair of free throws by Lawrence with 5:24 left in the opening period gave the Spartans their first lead of the game, 5-4, and CWRU would never trail again from that point forward in the contest. Leading 8-6 with 4:10 left in the first quarter, CWRU reeled off a 17-0 run over the next three minutes to go up by 19 points, 25-6, and closed out the opening period with a 25-10 advantage.

The Spartans maintained a double-figure lead throughout the second quarter, going ahead by as many as 20 following a layup by Gill with 1:34 to play that made the score 47-27, and CWRU carried a 47-29 advantage into halftime.

An offensive rebound and a put back by Lawrence with 5:29 in the third put the Spartans ahead by 25, 63-38, with 5:29 to play in the third, but Waynesburg trimmed the lead back to 15, 65-50, by the end of the third quarter. However, CWRU would pull away again late in the fourth, taking a game-high 26-point lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Claire Poulton with 1:40 remaining in the game, en route to the 24-point win.

The Spartans capitalized on 25 Waynesburg turnovers to score 36 points, compared to just 18 for the Yellow Jackets. CWRU finished the game shooting a season-high 43.4% overall, including a season-best 34.5% from behind the three-point line. The Spartans also tallied a season-high 25 assists in the game.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Friday against La Roche College at the Spring Hill Suites Tip-Off Tournament in Washington, Pennsylvania. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
