TOWSON, Md. – No. 20 Christopher Newport University hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:40 remaining and then survived two potential game-tying shots in the final seconds to get past Gettysburg College 70-67 at the Renie Amoss Memorial Tip-Off Classic hosted by Goucher College Friday evening.

Game Summary

  • First Quarter: Both teams struggled from the field in the opening quarter, combining to hit just 8-of-35 (22.9 percent) of their attempts. Richson sank the first bucket of the new season on the opening possession and gave Gettysburg an 11-8 lead on another three with three minutes remaining. San Diego posted the final two field goals of the opening period to give Christopher Newport a 12-11 lead.
  • Second Quarter: Both teams posted their best shooting performances in the second quarter, with the Captains knocking down 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) shots and the Bullets hitting 9-of-15 (60 percent). The lead changed hands six times with Gettysburg jumping ahead 16-15 on a lay-up by sophomore Hannah Sauve (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) at 8:31. Christopher Newport eventually took a 22-18 lead on a three-pointer by Phylicia McInnis at 6:06, but the Bullets came storming back with a 10-2 run and led 28-24 following a lay-up by Matto at 3:49. Christopher Newport retook the lead on a three-pointer by Fan with 56 seconds left in the half and a last-second lay-up by San Diego set the score at 36-33 heading into the locker rooms.
  • Third Quarter: The Captains remained in front throughout the third period with the Bullets closing to one point (44-43) on a three-pointer by senior Carly Rice (Pennington, N.J./The Pennington School) at 3:59. Christopher Newport rattled off eight of the next nine points and took a seven-point lead (52-45) into the final frame.
  • Fourth Quarter: Scoring the first five points gave the Captains a 57-45 advantage with just over nine minutes to go. The Bullets responded quickly with a 13-1 run as four different players put the ball in the hoop. An offensive rebound and putback by Tinner made it 58-56 and Rice forced a tie with a pair of free throws with 4:55 left. The Bullets stole the lead when Donohoe powered her way to the hoop with the harm for an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 61-60 at 4:13. The teams traded buckets with Gettysburg's last lead coming on a drive to the hoop by sophomore Caitlyn Priore (Holland, Pa./Germantown Academy) which made it 65-64 with 2:04 left. A three-pointer by Fan handed the lead back to the Captains just 24 seconds later. Gettysburg had two shots to tie the game in the final 10 seconds, but both were just off the rim.
