NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The nationally-ranked Captains' women's basketball team rolled to a 50-point victory at the Freeman Center on Tuesday night, downing Bridgewater College (0-2) by a final score of 109-59 to earn head coach Bill Broderick's his 200th career win at Christopher Newport.

Five players scored in double figures and the No. 20 Captains' dished an impressive 29 assists en route to the blowout victory. CNU also forced 41 Bridgewater turnovers and grabbed 21 steals with 11 blocked shots in the game as the defense ensured Broderick would reach the milestone via his patented suffocating defensive pressure.

The second CNU women's basketball coach to reach 200 wins on the Freeman Center sidelines, Broderick improved his overall record to 200-41 (.830). He has guided the Captains to seven NCAA Tournament appearances out of a possible eight as the head coach at Christopher Newport and has won four conference championships.

The Captains were on a torrid pace from the opening tip and never trailed in the contest. Seniors Sondra Fan and Natalie Terwilliger combined to score the first eight points for Christopher Newport before Bridgewater countered to pull within one, 10-9. From there, CNU built a big run, 14-3, to pull ahead by double digits in the opening quarter, 24-12. In the spurt, Terwilliger and Anaya Simmons scored back-to-back buckets and each grabbed a steal. Simmons scored six points in a span of just one minute before Gabbi San Diego and Jessica Foster hit back-to-back triples to extend the lead.

A small run by the Eagles in the second quarter got the lead down to just eight, 31-23, but Christopher Newport countered with another big roll, 10-1, to stymie any thought of a first-half comeback. The Captains ripped eight steals in the second stanza and leaned on the three-point shot to take a 48-34 lead at intermission. Foster hit two more while San Diego and Fan each knocked down one apiece in the second quarter.

Christopher Newport used a dominant third quarter to pull away, outscoring Bridgewater 27-9 out of the locker room to put the game well out of reach. Terwilliger caught fire, knocking down 4-of-6 shots from the field to score 10 points in the frame. She also added three blocked shots and one three-pointer as the C2C Player of the Week added another stellar outing in the second game of the year.

The passing was exceptional by the Captains all night long as Phylicia McInnis, San Diego, and Fan each had five helpers in the game. Foster notched back-to-back beauts in the fourth quarter when she split a pair of defenders on a backdoor cut to Fan for two and then lobbed a nice feed down low for rookie Hannah Orloff to finish. In total, 29 assists were recorded by the Royal Blue and Silver including multiple assists for eight CNU players.

All 16 players for Christopher Newport scored at least one point in the game as the Captains surpassed the century mark for the first time in 2021-22. The last time five or more players scored in double figures for CNU came on January 29, 2020. On Tuesday night, Fan's 19 points led a grouping that included 16 from Terwilliger, 15 by San Diego, 12 by rookie Hannah Kaloi, and 10 from Simmons to lead a balanced attack for the Captains. Fan's line at the end of the night was 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting including three three-pointers with five assists, five steals, and one rebound.

The 109 total points is tied for the 12th most in a single game for CNU and tied for the third highest total in the Bill Broderick era. The +50 point differential is also tied for the tenth largest margin of victory in the Freeman Center.

In addition to the milestone victory for the Captains' helmsman, the team picked up their 19th straight victory to tie for the second longest roll in program history. The longest win streak in CNU lore was a 30-game run to open the 2009-10 season.

Christopher Newport will return to action this weekend at the Renie Amoss Tip-Off Classic hosted by Goucher College on November 12-13. The Captains will first take on Gettysburg College for their season opener at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night before taking on the host Gophers (0-2) Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Video and live stats will be available for both games.
