Gwynedd Mercy Rallies On Senior Night

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Women's Basketball team celebrated its return to the court by erasing a 17-point deficit to start the fourth quarter in their 89-80 victory over Immaculata Wednesday evening on Senior Night. It was the first sporting event held on campus in just under a calendar year and was it ever memorable.

The Griffins outscored the Mighty Macs, 31-5, in the final frame to secure the win. Three players finished in double figures led by a career and game-high 25 points from Haley Crossley. Elise Sylvester added 16 and rookie Lynzie Eggers netted 14.

Theresa Kearney scored 22 for Immaculata, who built a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Teammate Jordan Rook totaled 15 points, 11 boards, and six assists, but IU had its troubles in the final frame, hitting just one field goal.

Crossley's three-pointer just before the buzzer capped off an 8-0 run to end the first half, but GMercyU still trailed, 50-45, at the break.

After gnawing Immaculata's lead down to three early in the third, the Mighty Macs ran off a 12-0 spurt to regain the advantage to help them to a 75-58 score heading into the final quarter.

In that final frame, Gwynedd scored the first 18 points and took their first lead since early in the contest on a driving bucket through the lane from Shannon Carroll. With 4:13 to play and a 76-75 score, the Griffins hit key free throws down the stretch, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the line to help ice the win.

Prior to the contest, the team and coaching staff took a moment to honor Carroll, Sydney Thompson, Dylan Johnson, and Jill Kane, the team's four seniors, along with their parents in a special pregame ceremony.

The two teams will meet tomorrow at Immaculata to close out their abbreviated season.
