W&J women improve to 4-0 after 77-38 win at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team coasted to a 77-38 victory over Thiel College in a Presidents' Athletic Conference game at the Rissell-Beeghly Gymnasium Friday night. 

The Presidents moved to 4-0 on the season while the Tomcats fell to 0-2 in 2021. W&J led 20-5 after the first quarter before taking a 39-13 advantage into halftime. The Presidents finished off the victory by outscoring the Tomcats 38-25 over the final 20 minutes of play. 

Junior guard Piper Morningstar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) led the way for the Presidents with a season-high collegiate best 15 points on six-of-nine shooting and a pair of three-pointers. Morningstar added four assists and three steals in the victory.

Kamryn Lach (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) enjoyed her best performance as a President, as the junior transfer connected on four-of-five three-point attempts for a season-high 12 points. Senior guard Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) finished with 10 points, a game-high five assists and three steals. 

Freshman center Sarah Berardelli (Ambridge, Pa./North Catholic) pulled down a season-best 10 rebounds in just 15 minutes to lead all players. Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) finished with eight points and eight rebounds. Maddie Gutierrez just missed scoring in double figures, as the junior tallied nine points off the bench. 

W&J put together another strong shooting performance, as the Red and Black converted at a 48.4 percent clip from the field and drained 10-of-20 attempts (50 percent) from behind the three-point line. The Presidents out-rebounded the Tomcats by a 42-36 margin and forced 26 Thiel turnovers. W&J held a 36-8 advantage on points in the paint and a 31-13 edge in bench points. Thiel connected on just 21.8 percent (12-of-55) shooting from the field.

The Presidents (4-0) heads to Steubenville, Ohio on Saturday afternoon for a PAC game against Franciscan University. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
