Titans Cruise To Win Over Pioneers

Kennedy Osterman led 11 UW-Oshkosh scorers with 15 points as the Titans women's basketball team never trailed during an 81-64 win at UW-Platteville on Friday (Feb. 5).

UW-Oshkosh, the two-time defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament champion, scored the first eight points of the game before building leads of 16-4 in the first quarter, 41-26 at halftime and 69-44 after three periods. The Titans, who led by as many as 27 points early in the third quarter and owned a double-digit cushion for the final 25:29 of the game, avenged a 74-68 home loss to UW-Platteville during the season opener Wednesday (Feb. 3).

Osterman shot 4-for-7 from the field, including 3-for-6 from 3-point range, and 4-for-4 at the free throw line while not committing a turnover and collecting a pair of steals in 27 minutes played on the way to pacing the Titans in scoring for the first time. Osterman scored 11 of her 15 points in the third quarter.

Karsyn Rueth and Julia Silloway added 12 points apiece for a balanced UW-Oshkosh scoring offense that also featured nine points from Jenna Jorgensen, eight from Leah Porath, seven from both Nikki Arneson and Abby Kaiser, and five from Allison Forney. Silloway paced the squad with six assists and four rebounds while Arneson and Porath also grabbed four boards apiece.

UW-Oshkosh (1-1, 1-1 WIAC) shot 56 percent (28-50) from the field, 50 percent (11-22) from beyond the 3-point arc and 60.9 percent (14-23) at the free throw line. The Titans, the 2020 NCAA Division III leader at 11.9 turnovers per game, owned advantages of 27-26 in rebounds, 11-19 in turnovers and 9-4 in steals en route to defeating the Pioneers for the 16th time in the last 18 meetings.

The Titans, who established WIAC records with 220 made 3-pointers and 669 3-point attempts last season, drained their most long-range jumpers since going 12 of 22 during an 85-76 triumph over UW-La Crosse on Feb. 8, 2020.

UW-Platteville's Maiah Domask led all players with 22 points and seven rebounds while adding a team-best four assists, a pair of steals and the game's lone block.

Jai Clemons contributed 12 points for the Pioneers, who have not won a home game against the Titans since a 78-66 decision Dec. 17, 2011.

UW-Platteville (1-1, 1-1 WIAC) went 23 of 47 (48.9 percent) from the field, 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) from 3-point range and 8-for-11 (72.7 percent) at the foul line. The Pioneers held edges of 13-12 in assists and 1-0 in blocks.

UW-Oshkosh never looked back after Silloway hit a 3-pointer to open the scoring with 8:01 left in the first quarter. Arneson followed with a 3-pointer of her own and Kaiser added a layup to provide the Titans an 8-0 lead before Jorgensen's 3-pointer extended the advantage to 16-4 at the 3:42 mark of the opening period.

The Titans went on to shoot 53.3 percent (8-15) from the floor during the first period, 58.3 percent (7-12) in the second and 64.3 percent (9-14) during the third.

UW-Oshkosh put the game away with a 14-2 scoring run during the first three minutes of the second half. Osterman sparked the run with a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the third period and later capped the surge with another long-range jumper that gave the Titans their largest lead at 55-28 with 7:04 left in the third.

The Titans travel to defending WIAC champion UW-Whitewater (2-0, 2-0 WIAC) on Wednesday (Feb. 10).
