Stormy Petrels complete two-game sweep of Hendrix, improve to 6-0 on season

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team continued their undefeated streak Saturday, improving to 6-0 on the season and extending their multi-year winning streak to 33 games with a 72-43 win over Hendrix in Conway, Arkansas. The result kept the Stormy Petrels tied with Millsaps atop the SAA standings.

The homestanding Warriors kept the Petrels to within arm's length for much of the first half, traling by just 9 points, 34-25, at the break and pulling as close as 4 points, 24-20, at the 6:45 mark of the second quarter. However, the Petrels pulled away in the third quarter.

They outscored Hendrix 20-7 in the third quarter. That served as part of a 48-20 run dating from the Oglethorpe 4-point lead at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter.

The Petrels shot well from the field in the game, converting on 49.2 percent of their field goal attempts. They did that while holding the Warriors to just 25.5 percent. The Petrels also forced 24 Hendrix turnovers for the second consecutive game. This led to a 24-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Oglethorpe also outscored the home side 38-9 off the bench and by a whopping 42-6 margin in the paint.

Sophomore guard Sarah Plemons led the scoring for the Petrels, pouring in 12 points on 5-of-8 from the field. Freshman center Wylie Sheridan had the best game of her young career, collecting 10 rebounds over 19 minutes for the visitors while also adding 5 points. Senior center Savannah LeGate scored 9 points in 15 minutes and recorded a couple blocks.

The Petrels will take next weekend off before returning to action at Dorough Field House against a Millsaps team they share first place with. Those games are set to take place Friday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m.
